Royal Rother As I have said repeatedly, it is no foregone conclusion that we will sell Doyle and Hunt in January because for that to happen someone needs to be in a position to splash some cash and their won't be much of that flying around for a while; but anyway, top-team Birmingham are more likely to need to sell players than Reading in January.

Some of this is guesswork but I guess most would agree:

> Their ground is significantly larger than ours and, although their average attendance is marginally higher in numbers, it is much smaller than ours in percentage of capacity (66% to our 80%). This will presumably mean they are generating less net income from matches.

> They had a much higher net outflow of funds in transfers both last season and this pre-season and are therefore likley to be carrying higher short-term debt.

> They have a higher wage bill.

> They have no-one of any note coming through to the 1st team from their Academy.

> They have owners who are far more disenchanted with owning a football club than we have.

So anyway, regarding the issue of selling best players in January, at the moment I would suggest that Birmingham are more likely than Reading to go down that route, and even if we do, in Coppell we have a manager who knows exactly what is required to build a promotion winning team on a budget. Birmingham don't have that and Wolves, well, Wolves have Mick McCarthy. (Actually, I do rate him but not in Coppell's league.)

How does this sit with what Reading did close season and what Birmingham did close season - a period which, some might argue, might provide an indication of what may happen in January?

that depends- how are the players we sold doing in the prem?
and are the players brum kept hold of, thet everyone was talking about leaving doing any good in the championship?

In what way is either of your questions relevent to whether we sell Doyle, Hunt or anyone else in January or not?

Looking at the Brum squad I cant see a lot there to tempt a Prem side, whereas we have Doyle and Hunt, both of whom were courted, Hunt last Jan and Doyle in the summer. Can't see Bikey or Maje going anywhere yet, not enough experience.

I can see us offering both good contracts to stay, with good new salaries should we go up, and a get out clause should we fail.

its relevant to the point you made though.

and i do think that doyle and hunt may well look at how the other lads have done when assessing if they really want to go.
also its relevant, in that we lost our 4 best players, and seem to have managed to survive, nay flourish without them,

Fair question but in June - August I think people and institutions were prepared / able to fund football clubs' activities in a way they can't do now, and certainly not when we are officially in recession in January.

I still feel that, due to the way in which our finances have been managed in the last couple of years, we will in a good position in the next year or 2 to take advantage of other clubs' misfortune / mismanagement.

I dont agree we lost our 4 best players, we know Shorey was pissed off and not playing to his past level, Kitson was hardly banging the goals in, and is know known or believed to have been a bit gobby to his team mates at times, Little I have been told was fun but disruptive to newer members of the team, Sonko, well there were loads on here thought he was not much good and a liability.

I would say we kept our best players, and have added new ones that make the team more of a team than last season.

Cheers. I typed my post at the same time as you, and added Oster as a clear joke.

Little was, of course, the Best Reading Player Ever.

We lost shorey last season to england, the player that returned wasn't the same.

Little yes, even though we would likely only got half a season out of him.

Keeping Little would have been a bonus for this season certainly, but let's face it, he's not going to play at the level we need him to for much longer.
Great character around the Club by all accounts, shame that he left.
On his day, he was one of the best (certainly English) wingers in the Country.
Oh well, lots of players would have done the same.

So, just to recap, who is saying that letting Little going to Portsmouth is contradictory to Reading making progression.

Because, honestly, it isnt.
