He could just say nothing at all, or go off on one like Stephen Hunt. Perhaps Stephen Hunt's agent should take a few tips from him then.

Why is there even a discussion of this, it's been stated categorically by many posters on this very board that Doyle (and of course Steven Hunt, Bikey, probably Noel, UNcle Tom Cobbley and all) is definitely leaving in January. They couldn't be wrong, could they?

6ft Kerplunk Nope its just what he's been told to say by his agent so a) he doesn't piss off the fans and b) doesn't lose his loyalty bonus by asking for a move whilst making it well known that he'll go if there's a bid.

Its not up to Doyle though is it? He is under contract; only if the CLUB accept a bid for him from another club, and Doyle then agrees to talk to that club, and then agrees personal terms will he be off.

I suspect he knows that we wouldn't accept anything under £10M for him, and though the club would tell him if a bid has been received (which is the etiquette in these situations) it would also tell him that they value him far more than what is being offered. I would imagine that a new contract may be discussed post 30th January 2009 if he is still with us.

If a club comes in and makes a bid we can't possibly refuse - say £15m - can we just push him out and say 'on your bike, sonny'? Or can he turn round and say 'no, I don't wanna go. Please don't make me!' and lock himself in the toilet or somethink?

He doesn't have to agree terms with the other club. He's still contracted to us so we can't force him out without paying up the contract. Generally that only happens rarely, and with players who don't want to be sold to less good clubs on less good terms.

Likewise we don't have to accept any bid, unless it trips a release clause of some type. For example the reputed £5m level for SHunt

I wouldn't know if they can all be wrong or not, but I suspect that many people who claim to have inside knowledge have no such thing, or are told by somebody at the club who is not in the know anyway. What I do know is that many on here talk a lot of rubbish! (Probably you think I do sometimes, but it is my own rubbish opinion, not rumour).

Thanks Ian. So it all depends on the contract. Do transfer requests mean that a player is breaking his contract? Is that why they don't like putting them in?

Normally, no. Transfer requests aren't breaking contract

Your damned if you do, damned if you don't?

In his situation he can't say anything right, so it would probably do better to say nothing. Its not like he needs to be in the press for any reason?

I don't think hes as sly as people make out. after all he dosnt have an agent? iirc he did his last contract without one anyway?

Billy O'Neil in Dream Team once locked himself in the toilet so he didn't have to go to West Ham :?

Players get put into press conferences by the teams after matches; the press ask direct questions, and then print the answers. I suspect this is the result of a journo asking him a question, rather than he (or agent) seeking to get his words published.

I'd rather crawl down the toilet than go to West Ham.

I'd guess it has a little to do with losig loyalty bonuses in contracts and a little to do with being seen as a bad egg.

Also why put in a request when you can just use your agent and the papers to get what you want?

Leave it to January.

We'll get offers no shed of a doubt, it's all down to if he wants to go. I would rather lose him than SHunt, IF we had the pick.

Villa want him badly I have heard on so many occasions.

you would like to think he will stay til the end of the season to try and gain promotion
