2 world wars, 1 world cup Deep down I'm sure no-one in their right mind is expecting anything other than us getting slaughtered in the playoffs.

You are joking?

We may not be in the best form at the moment, but when have we been slaughtered by anyone this season?

Swansea away. Southampton at home. Ipswich away.

FWIW I agree with you, these are only 2 - maybe 3 games - and we have as good a chance as anyone. But we are not invincible.

I'm not saying we are, but we are as good as any team we may come across.

Results V Burnley : 3-1 at home, 0-1 away but unlucky not to win

Results v Sheff Utd : 0-1 at home, 2-0 away from home

Results v Cardiff: 1-1 at home, 1-1 away from home coming back from 1-0 down with 10 men

Result V B'ham : 3-1 comfortable away win

Nothing to scare us there.

You are joking?

We may not be in the best form at the moment, but when have we been slaughtered by anyone this season?

We are still a good side, and all this bollocks about us having no chance in the play-offs is just crap made up by pessimistic moaning 'fans'.

This is a team that still has the best GD in the division, despite only winning 4 in the last 18 matches, and has only lost one away game in the league since October.

So I very much doubt anyone but the usual pessimistics (Deathy, Royalee et al) will be predicting anything but tough, but winnable, matches.

Good on you mate. I hope you're right.

As a fellow optimist/realist I'd love to agree with you and it feels odd wirting what I did but the GD/good results you mention are largely from the former part of the season when we were awesome. Our current form, recent GD etc are all abysmal. The good work of earlier in the season is pulling us through.

Unfortunately we have to field today's team with today's form in the playoffs, not yesterdays, as time travel hasn't been invented yet

It's hopefully been made clear what I think of pessimistic moaning fans, some of whose views are so laughable I wonder if they're Swindon/Oxford fans trying to sabotage the club... but I have to say with this one it's not just the "pessimistic moaning 'fans'" who are saying this - it's die hard optimists like me too.

Havign said that though mate my optimist side still reckons we might do it for the reasons I laid out, so I don't totally disagree. I won't be posting too much else by way of negativity, honest.

Comprehensively beaten =/= slaughtered

We were in no way slaughtered by Ipswich. And yes, I was there, in fact we had a beer.

We're down to semantics now - but in my book you don't need to concede lots of goals to be slaughtered. If we were still playing that game against Ipswich we'd still not have scored!

My Derby-loving friend had this to say to me today:
Watching Derby win the play off final was a brilliant experience (the following season wasn't but the day was worth it).

Now I'm wondering if I should be careful what I wish for.

Dirk Gently Swansea away. Southampton at home. Ipswich away.

Luckily, we wont play any of these in the playoffs (OK, Swansea maybe).

Put it this way - if we predict the 4 teams as Cardiff, Reading, Sheffield United and Burnley. How do you think the bookmakers will price it up. My guess, is that Cardiff will be favourite, us 2nd favourites and then Sheffield United and Burnley vying for outsiders. Im not saying that is how it should be, but I dont think that order of odds is too far off from reality. And how do you rate our chances against those teams.
Cardiff - Always a close game, could go either way (I think this would make a good final)
Burnley - They are turning into a pretty decent outfit - proper dark horses
Sheffield United - I fancy our chances against them.
I believe that whatever way you look at it, there is no real evidence that we'll get 'slaughtered' (I know it wasnt you that said that Dirk!) and that the playoffs look to be a close affair. The two teams we have the right to fear the most are most likely to go up automatically. (You could argue that we should let one of them win on the final day!). In our current form, there isnt a case for being over optimistic of us succeeding, but you cant discard us yet.

For a start, of the three games we need to qualify via, only one is at home.

Exactly. Thanks for the respect you're giving my every word guys but my posts are not spiritual revelation from God so please don't argue about the exact word used! :P

I'll rephrase:

Deep down I'm sure no-one in their right mind is expecting anything other than us to lose fairly easily in the playoffs.

I think that if we finish 3rd or 4th we will be favourites. Playoffs are a mini-competition of themselves, it's been argued that all form goes out the window. So over the season we may not have been best, but it's widely said we have the best squad, and look at the first half of our season to see how good we were.

Once again 2ww 1ww, you won't find too many people agreeing with you on that one.

I am worryingly optimistic that we will win the play-offs (assuming we don't get automatic promotion.)

Remind me again what scenarios have to occur for us to get automatic promotion?

1. An FA recount of points won in the Championship transpires to be in our favour.

It's inevitable. Reading lose to Burnley in the Final.

1995 - Owen Coyle, misses out on League Cup Final, dropped. Comes back for Play Off Final. Scores in Play Off FInal.
2009 - Owen Coyle, misses out on League Cup Final, losing SF in last minute, gets to Play Off FInal.

Throw in 1994, Owen Coyle scores in Scottish Play Off Final.

The man's an expert. Destiny

Well as Birmingham losing one and us winning one is the same outcome in one of the games - the odds come down even more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're still a relative new comer (no dig intended by that) with little play off experience aren't you? You'll learn.
