Not sure RL's seen a game we've won. Perhaps we should pay her to stay away... or hide from everyone.

brendywendy just saying he didnt refuse to pay money to replace sidders as you said, he tried very hard to- and the two players bid for before fae would have done enough to keep us up easily imo.the only gripe should be that coppell wouldnt spend record cash on his 2nd/3rd choices, and imo thats also fair enough

Coppell only bought second choices, refusing to sign anyone who would have walked into the side ahead of one of his favorites. A Robbie Savage or Nickie Butt would have been within our grasp and add to this James Harper having to play whenever there was an "R" in the month was the difference between mid table and relegation. If Stoke, Buirmingham and Fulham can manage it so could we.

no, thats bollox
john mensah, and scott brown were 1st choices, and we made club record bids for both.

Like every other club we had bids turned down. We also had deals lined up that he elected not to go through with. Replacing a moderately talented water carrier who has been largely anonymous since the day he left us should have been child's play

Perhaps it's also accurate to say that the Chairman tried very hard not to spend too much money replacing Sidwell. Afterall, he and you both know too well that money talks. Bid enough and your bid will not be turned down, as Hoffenheim recently demonstrated! Maybe Coppell was never given enough money to stand any real chance of a successful bid.

the bids were enough imo
scott brown was asked by his club if he wanted to come here, so it must have been enough from their point of view, its just he didnt think we'd stay up.correctly as it happens- though if hed have come id suggest it would have been different

He spent all that would have been required on Fae

agree with that tbf.
but every manager makes bad buys- and coppells record here stands up with NY OF THE CURRENT GREAT OPREM MANAgERS- id rTHER A fAE THAN A DJEMBA DJEMBA

and i think things like Fae contributed to coppells later lack of enthusiasm for buying expensive players, and with faes inability to play here, and our success with cheap players you can surely see why?!

Svlad Cjelli When he says "moderately talented water carrier who has been largely anonymous since the day he left us" I don't know if he's talking about Sidwell or Harper, tbh.

Who mentioned Harper other than you?

Eh? :?:

That's the point I was making. I don't know who you were talking about when you used that phrase - it could apply to both of them equally.

Last night's game

by ITFC_Keane » 29 Sep 2010 18:42

Well played, you deserved the win on chances made. We were actually disappointed with the team's performance yet again; we can play a lot better. Hyam was daft to get sent off but thought the ref was a b*stard all evening, and affected both sides.

You'll definitely be up there this season. You've got a lot of strong players. I liked that Karacan. I also thought Long did well up front. Bit disappointed with Kebe, but you could see glimpses of his class, thought Jaime P did a fantastic job on him. We were hoping for Priskin second half but he never came on, Ithink he'd have had more joy than Scotland up front.

All in all though an enjoyable evening apart from the result. Hopefully we'll get back on track v Leeds on Saturday!

As we're in mutual appreciation society mode, I'll add that many here have heaped prise onto Peters for his superb defensive performance - you have a gem there.

We wont last the pace, ITFC. Our squad is wafer thin and it wont take more than an injury or two and the odd suspension to derail us, but a top ten finish would be good for me with how keen the chairman is to sell every asset here.

I'm no doom-monger but I agree. The squad in its current guise won't be breaking the top six. There aren't enough goals in it for a start.

Ipswich were decent I thought. Didn't create a lot but they were the away side and I reckon they're in good shape for the season.

Delighted Pearce did so well. He seems to struggle against the smaller, quicker type of player though.
I would like to see him alongside Kish for a few weeks. Mills needs to calm down and a spell on the bench won't do him any harm.

You could say that about almost any squad in this division though.

I agree apart from we are actually in the top 6! Can't see us there come the end of the sason without a large slice of luck on the injury front.

bit of an odd statement to make given that Tabb, Griffen & Gunnarsson are out injured, Ingimarsson and Armstrong are only just coming back from injury and Howard, Khizanishvili and now Mills are suspended and we've been winning games.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant.

There's no accounting for a couple of signings though, so who knows.

But it's not only about the headline figure of the transfer fee.
Remember Coppell's "all fur coat and no knickers" quip, when he was bemoaning the difficulty in attracting players here.
Let's face it, we have all heard about the little "sweeteners" that get tacked on like loyalty bonuses, signing on fees, image rights, etc etc.
We all know that this is a bullshit vehicle with the sole purpose of lining the pockets of players and their agents alike.
Realistically, I would think that any established Prem player would expect top wages, and all the "jam" they could possibly spread on top of it.
I suspect their demands would be greater when signing for a "smaller" club, because playing for a bigger club carries a degree of career kudos.
I reckon that Dave Whelan could well pay over the odds to get bodies in at Wigan. Our chairman is a different character altogether, and suspect he took the view that footballers are massively overpaid already, and to see some oik wanting to be paid via an offshore investment company probably left him sick to the stomach, as it does me.

[quote="Woodcote Royal"] moderately talented water carrier who has been largely anonymous since the day he left us
That statement is utterly preposterous. He wasn't signed by fcuking Rochdale. Sidders was considered good enough to be signed (it pains me to write this) by one of the top clubs in the country. He was not a fixture in the first team there, because he was competing for a place with some of the best players in the world. He is now at Aston Villa, another top 6 club, with a long history of silverware.
