Royal Lady This is what I don't understand - when we went up, we must have known the approximate amounts we would be getting in extra money - so why did we increase our wage bill so exhorbitantly?

It was a most uncharacteristic "gamble" on getting back up in that first season. Keep the likes of Doyle, Hunt, Shorey and go for it.

SC can be very persuasive when he's got a couple of hundred people in his car park space chanting his name - I think everyone more or less got carried away with the emotion that week and thought "we'll go for it for a year".

........But we didn't keep Shorey.

You're right - brainfart there. I got my season mixed up. I'm trying to remember who else we did keep.....

Hahneman, Harper, Murty, Ivar, Marek, Cisse, Long, Rosie, Doobs would all have been on big wages, a fact you can deduce if only be looking at who was released/sold the season after.

On top of that the club then bought Armstrong and N Hunt who were Championship/SPL players and would have been on decent money. We then bought back Little and Kitson who we'd have been paying a decent amount of their Premier League wages.

Kebe was also signed as a Premiership player remember. Harper, Ingimarsson and Gunarasson would all have got good pay rises whilst in the Premier League too.

The key is how many were forced to take the 40% cut that we were told about, and how many were kept on the higher wages in order to encourage them to see out the season. I think the wage bill was about £12m the season we went up, hit about £34m by the time we came back down and then ended up at whatever it was stated for Coppells last hurrah.

I'm really referring to the players we could have sold for serious money but chose to hold onto. We wouldn't have got much for Hahnemann, Murty,Ingi,Cisse,Rosenior or Duberry. Might have got a decent amount for Harps and Long back in August 2008.

FiNeRaIn No, I'm sorry but its not really that obvious at all. They've got more history than us,

Blackpool FC: founded 1887
Reading FC: founded 1871

Er, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you here, we've got 16 years more history than they have.

Good to have you back big lad.

Glad you're happy. Still no come back from Finers, oh well!

The salient point is who we took the gamble on keeping by paying top dollar to though.

That list above includes a lot of players who were going to be on money over and above what we can afford as a Championship club.
