Leon Best

According to Fordham and reports in Ireland, Long will be off to Newcastle. Leon Best coming this way plus cash. Best as a replacement for Long? Hmmm.. :?

Wouldn't be a bad deal in my opinion, depending on how much cash is involved.

Decent player. I'd be happy with him as a replacement for Long.

Best is a good player and has potential - also similar age to Long but he has been injury prone. He may be better suited to Championship than PL level.

As long as any deal is only for 2 years in case of further injuries - it might work out ok.

Newcastle paid 500K for him apparently - so hope we get Best plus at least 6M.

Playing record....

2004–2007: Southampton 15 games and 4 goals
QPR (loan) 5 games and 0 goals
Sheff Wed (loan) 2 games and 1 goal

2006
Sheff Wed (loan) 11 games and 1 goal
Bournemouth (loan) 15 games and 3 goals
Yeovil Town (loan) 15 games and 10 goals

2007–2010: Coventry City 92 games and 19 goals

2010-Present: Newcastle United 24 games and 6 goals

Got injured in March but had managed 6 goals in 10 starts previous to this.

That works out at approx 1 goal every 4 games, personally I think that is only fair return for a striker, but then perhaps a lot of the games he's credited with were games where he was a sub, so maybe his strike rate v minutes played is more impressive.

This sounds like the kind of deal we would need I reckon. We get a immediate 'proven' replacement and some cash to splash on players to strengthen the squad rather than simply replace those players that leave us. Time for Hammond to prove his worth if this rumour has any kind of substance......

At this level Best would be a very good signing. You look around at who else we can try and get for what we'd probably spend and there aint much out there with his sort of experience.

Hope this has some substance to it.

Any chance of a decent amount of cash and Best on a season long loan with an already agreed fee to buy him if we want to at the end of the season? A kind of try before you buy scenario.

Doubt Newcastle would agree to that as they have already said they don't want Best and transfer listed him.

I am not so sure

Leon Best 2011 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>George Best 2011

I understand that he is not the player he used to be this season.

If we can get him fit and get him back to anywhere near his best form then he'd be a good addition.

Getting and keeping him fit seems to be a bit of a problem though, that would be my only concern really, well that and whether we're getting the best financially from Longs departure.

crikey, some of you are hard to please. if not best then who? it's not like we have a bulging transfer budget like say leicester. best would be a good signing for this level.

To be fair only two posters were negative and one of them was Royalee. As Royalee hates everything and everyone his views don't count really!

Didn't he score a Premier League hat-trick last season?
