Duke the Dog Nice idea, but who's going to pay £2-3M for their name on our stadium? And is that for a year, 5 years, 10 years, forever?

Get a grip.

You might get someone to pay 500k tops for a couple of years!

How much is the shirt sponsorship worth?

So the club can afford to do without 500K tops for a couple of years?!

Incredible that such a well run business is prepared to forego that sort of income. £500K is a decent player's wages.

The price of Ego £500K+

Oh, I forgot, naming the stadium after him wasn't his idea!

Rev Algenon Stickleback H
Friday's Legacy reading could expect at least £500k a season for what is effectively nothing.

What would £500k buy us exactly?

And it'd give a joke named stadium. I mean, would you really want us to play in the Waitrose Stadium so we can sign another back-up defender?

No more of a joke than the current name!

And yes, to your question.

Quite why any fan of the club would prefer them to coin in £500,000 a year, which they will never clearly see spent, and have the stadium called the waitrose bowl or something equally gay, rather than stick with the current arrangement is beyond me.

The Madejski Stadium may not be anyone's first choice of name but it's better than any sponsored crap.

The Goat was fed I was literally just going to start a new topic on this.

I am absolutely furious by the declaration that none (as in oxf*rd all) of the Mills money will be made available for future transfers.

If Madejski is genuinely obsessed with the balance sheets etc. he can forego having his worthless name on the stadium. The constant excuse of "we are running business" comes completely unstuck at this one point. With stadia naming rights, we are sitting on an untapped revenue stream that is worth at least a couple of million with the right name.

1. BMcD has a transfer budget already in place
2. JM has an ego the size of a planet
3. The club is run as a business and the aim is to be self financing
4. Stop posting drivel

It's not drivel. If we're struggling for money why can't we utilise other methods to raise funds?

Point 2 refers. When SJM sells up it will be on the proviso that the stadium keeps its current name.

Here's a question. Apart from stadium naming rights, what other potential revenue streams exist that have not been tapped into? I will throw a few into the ring:

1. Stand sponsorship. Have the naming rights for all 4 stands been sold? This was always the argument from the club when the supporters wanted to have stands named after former players / managers etc.

2. Additional shirt / short sponsorship. What regulations, if any, prevent the club from tapping into this?

3. Concourse sponsorship. If the stands can be sponsored then why not the concourses?

4. Goal / substitute announcements. Other clubs have done this.

My whole point is that if there is such an issue with the finances, why don't the club explore such avenues? There must be more opportunities than those I have listed.

And people wonder why he hasn't sold the club!

Many other rich/successful people also have quite sizeable egos. If point 2 is true, they probably wouldn't be too keen about the old owner's name lingering on in such a high profile manner.

Ups and Downs Quite why any fan of the club would prefer them to coin in £500,000 a year, which they will never clearly see spent, and have the stadium called the waitrose bowl or something equally gay, rather than stick with the current arrangement is beyond me.

+1

In years to come when Madejski has moved on then this appeals more as it's a link to history.
What sort of legacy would be provided by a random company name?

Let's not become a complete sell out for the sake of a few £100ks.

As for all the other sponsorship ideas (goals/concourses etc) have people gone mad?
"Today's own goal by Andy Griffin is sponsored by.........the News of the World"......

Maybe it is madness but I would have thought that the club would be doing everything possible to squeeze the alst penny out of any opportunity. After all, they have the Golden Gamble draw sponsored. Why stop there?

Is that The Mad Stad that features in the trailer for Channel 4's 'Dispatches - How to buy a football club' programme due to be shown this coming Monday at 8pm?

Somewhat ironic if it is!

^ this.

I'd rather that than have it called Emirates Stadium.

Surely something like the Addidas stadium or the Fosters stadium wouldn't be that bad? and surely if it was a bigger brand (i.e. addidas) we could push for more money and get around £1m a year? Or we could sponsor the roof, as numerous clubs do.

I remember laughing at Plymouth when we heard that the match was being sponsored by the local undertakers.

...probably wouldn't laugh now.

Am I being a bit stupid or aren't we the original naming rights stadium?

The club has essentially been financed by a company/individual who then put his name on the stadium thus improving his profile.

Just a thought!

Yes. And no.
No disrespect but if you believe this then your stadium naming history doesn't extend too far back does it?

reebok stadium and brittania stadium are just two that immediately spring to mind before we named ours, and john madejski doesn't pay the club for the privilege where as bolton and stoke receive sponsorship for their stadium naming rights.

I think the first was the McAlpine Stadium in Huddersfield. That was one of the first of the "new generation" of stadia.
