rhroyal AFC Wimbledon and Aldershot both show that a club is made up of fans and won't die with a winding up order. Let these clubs (or "entities") who overspend go to the wall. If the fans are truly loyal there is a way back to the FL for them.

It depends. If either of those had had to start out at a very basic ground, then neither would be where they are today.

For Aldershot, it would just have been like carrying on where thet left off, albeit it in another much lower division. If they'd had to restart hiring the local council sports centre, or some ground with cover for 50 people and nothing else, fans would not have stuck with them.

Same for Wimbledon. It would have been much harder if they couldn't have shared with Kingstonian. It wouldn't have been impossible, with Newport County are a decent example, but they aren't the club they were by a long stretch.

Just a pointer to people to watch Channel 4 Dispatches - "How to buy a football club" tomorrow evening.

The tag line is :
With a Select Committee looking into the state of football and growing calls for reform, an undercover investigation by Dispatches finds out who wants to own the beautiful game and reveals how ex players and foreign businessmen are prepared to circumvent the rules, to cash in on a sport that's in financial freefall.

maybe they've been reading hob-nob, and are about to expose the millions he's taken out of the club through shady accounting. And his name sounds a bit foreign.

Birmingham fans seem jittery...

Wonder why Bryan Robson was being filmed "undercover" http://www.channel4.com/programmes/disp ... club-video

I wondered the same but think the 'shopping of the stadium (removing the hospitality from the West) was just so the "for sale" letters made sense at the end of the trail

My sources tell me that Coventry are in real financial trouble, with only enough money to keep going for a few months. It was suggested that Clingan may be sold to raise some money but he's just been made club captain/is important to them, so if this happens it really is a last resort. Losing Westwood and (more importantly) King may mean they are already certs for the bottom six and it could b a looong long season for the Sky Blues.

Money is getting tighter, attendances will fall for at least the next couple of years so this thread is going to run and run and run.

Will they? Aren't they still climbing, even in the current financial climate?

I don't think so, but they will fall in the next couple of years for sure.

The DCMS report into Football Governance is released on Friday, and all the smart money is on there being a club licensing system -probably one administered by the FA (with statuary powers).

Expect the PL to fight tooth and nail against this.

Quite believeable - the assets of Carston Yeung have been frozen because of his money-laundering case, so they may not be able to pay their bills.

Would that mean a points deduction, or would they have until the start of the season to sort themselves out?

If they enter administration they'll never sort it out in time. Lovely jubbly.

West Ham's current strategy could see them let off in a few years time if they don't bounce straight back.

Definite mandatory points deduction for any insolvency event.

It's okay, though. They won a cup.

Once again, so glad we don't have that sort in charge of us. He was always a dodgy prospect--had trouble coming up with the money to buy the club, as I recall. The club are talking as if Yeung's prosecution is an inconvenience that will eventually pass, but that's to assume he's innocent. Something similar happened with Thaksin Shinawatra, who turned out to have been a tea-leaf of the first order. I don't like the way Birmingham imply they're untainted by Yeung's problems--where did the money he bought the club with come from? Maybe City were just one big piece of laundry for him.

Peter Pannu has basically prepared Brum fans for the worst. If it isn't nailed down I think it's about to get sold.
