&open goal >>>>>>small sight of goal with big keeper in way, so he should have passed

but ive seen many much better players than mcanuff go for the shot in teh same circumstances, so maybe its best to say its a mistake, made up for later by the cross for the goal, and not get too hung up about it

Wow, lets crucify a player for having a shot when well placed, because he missed and could have passed.

No way you'd all be still banging on about this if it had been one of your favourites who did it. Get over it.

You really have a taste for melodrama Ian.

I think some of us are contending that he couldn't (well, 'shouldn't' anyway) have passed on the basis that by the time the ball would have reached his teammate an oppo player (including possibly the 'keeper himself) would have snuffed out (blocked, intercepted or put off in some other way) the chance as these incidents occur in micro seconds, not full ones.

if he was going to shoot though, across the keeper, so any rebound could have reached the striker would have been best
but either way, its just a mistake, and he mad eup for it, so lets move on

What would have happened to McAnuff's pass was exactly what happened to Fabregas's in the match tonight in the 81st minute. In the micro seconds that the pass and the travel of the ball took, oppo players snuffed out the attack.

Agree that the better option for McAnuff would have been to shoot across the goalkeeper so that if the keeper parries it, it falls into the path of an oncoming Reading player.

Don't agree, however, with the sentiment "let's move on, he redeemed himself a few minutes later." I don't care if he'd saved our Queen's life ten minutes later, the whole point of this forum is to discuss specific incidents i.e. incidents in isolation (as well as general issues) and that's what we were doing.

and have done.
just saying that just because he messed up that chance, doesnt mean he is a terrible player, and just because he wasnt at his best , doesnt mean you should ignore the good things he did manage to do.
