Royalee Given they had a year less of TV money plus they went down to League 1, plus they kept a lot of their Premier League squad for longer than we did, plus they splashed out money on James Beattie, Ched Evans and others, one would hope the difference to be more than £13 million with all the players we've sold...

That's a load of nonsense given they made a loss of 18m the year before. And given they received decent sums of money for Walker and Naughton, as well as Slew who they sold this year, the difference is probably a fair bit less.

FAO McDermott - Why are you using the same tactics with Le Fondre that you did with Long? Pump the ball up the field and see if he wins a header.

And Federici was at fault for the goal. Why is McCarthy out on loan? Why is Howard out on loan?

mcarthy- to get games, so that when fed gets his move, he can slot right in
howard cos he wasnt playing, and didnt do anything every time he did
agree fed may have been slightly at fault, but its a harsh call.
disagree with same tactics, humping it much less now. but agreed, we need to do even more of the passing game now.

I was expecting a degree of negative crap after we lost a game that we shouldn't have. That, however, takes the biscuit. Federici 'at fault for a freak that looped over him?

I can't understand the clamour for Howard. The guy is absolutely dreadful, slow, can't get about the pitch, one footed and creates absolutely NOTHING.

I watched the Millwall game today and all he did was give it away for an hour before being replaced by James Henry.

He is absolute dog eggs and if that's the answer then God help Ding.

He dropped the first shot and was so far off his line for the second.

This isn't the first time he has made a mistake. It's becoming like a cricket score.

thats better passing from the back, and ball retention than since shorey left imo
tbh im sure the team are quite glad if "fans" like you stay away

Firstly, no it isn't. Secondly, given that Madejski's only motivated by money, he'd rather as many fans went as possible - but then I guess he has the catch 22 of still having gullible moron average Reading fans lining up to pay for his asset stripping cash cow. I doubt the players or management give a toss whether I turn up or not, but then again I don't really care for most of them at the moment. Yesterday summed up everything which is bad with RFC - crap football (didn't Brian Clough once say if God wanted football to be played in the air he'dve put grass up there?), overpaid toss like Kebe looking disinterested and tripping over the ball and a rubbish atmosphere to match.

I used to go home and away for years in League 1 and enjoyed games far more than I have done recently - for all the pies he ate at least Caskey could pass a football and we used to create chances and showed ambition. It's downright depressing to see a club with our potential stagnating with a chairman who no longer gives a toss and a yes man running out of ideas picking the team.

You pal are the epitome of a glory hunting "supporter"
I have followed this club since 1971 watching all sorts of tripe, poor teams, bad players, bad managers and of course chairman not up to the job. I have also seen little old Reading beating some of the best teams in the land with some fantastically gifted players (coincidently purchased and financed by our CURRENT chairman)
The difference between you and me is that I will continue to watch through thin and thinner, season in season out.
Sure I get depressed when we lose, but hey we're Reading Football Club and I suppose that's an occupational hazard!

I thought it was a better performance to be honest but, and it's a big but, we're still seriously lacking in cutting edge.

As I've said previously, we're fine at containing teams and keeping things relatively tight but when we're trying to make chances and score goals we're lacking. This is largely because of the way we're set up and the lack of quality at the business end of the pitch.

Although we didn't score from them I actually thought our corners were much improved, certainly in the first half at least.

I'm a bit worried by McDermotts comments after the game though. I know he has to keep things positive but he reckoned they didn't have many chances. Not lots I agree, but they had enough to at least earn a point against a good side and unfortunately that translates to enough to beat a mediocre outfit like us.

Agree with every single word in these quotes

He's a fat, horrible kunt. Plus he's from Swindon.

I had a bad feeling as soon as Cardiff got the their first, bit of a fluke, but too easily given away by Kebe regardless, he simply knocked it too long straight to Whittinghams feet...bugger all Feds could have done to be honest...

Other than that, Hunt had a couple of half chances in the first half, for the best of the two his first touch took him a bit wide and a good block saw it go over....not sure about the penalty shouts, couldn't see clearly one way or the other from where I was, but they both looked more ball-to-hand than anything to me...

In fairness I can only remember Cardiff creating one other chance in the first half, a free kick which Feds saved - we were definitely the better side I felt, just missing a touch of luck.

Kebes disallowed goal was clearly offside, only debate was whether the flick came off a Reading head (I think it probably did)...again we looked the better side, at the start of the second half it only looked a matter of time before we equalised...

Cardiff started to come back into it, and then got their second - what looked like a highly debatable free kick, and I suspect that City had done their homework; it's not the first time this season we've been done from a deep free kick on the right to the near post - something definitely needs work there....

A great cross from ALF for Kebes goal (actually ALF also nearly played Karacan in earlier in the half I think? - couple of nice bits of creativity from him, maybe he's not just a finisher?), but pretty much that was that.....Manset and HRK never got into the game and it sort of fizzled out at the death (albeit Cardiff showed that they know how to kill a game off and keep the ball)...

My over-riding feeling is of frustration - we've played so much worse this season and scraped draws and even wins, yet yesterday I thought on the whole we played OK, but didn't get the rub of the green. It felt like the ref and linos all had pretty poor games, but aside from Kebes disallowed goal I've not seen any of the other key incidents to judge whether that was true...

Absolutely there's stuff that needs work - we need to defend set pieces better, the strikers need to start hitting the back of the net (suspect that this is confidence as much as anything), McAnuff (incidentally, who was it asked when the last time he created anything was? Birmingham ring any bells?) and Kebe keep making good runs and then failing to find a final ball. On the plus side, Mills seems to be getting better, defensively we look well organised (save for the odd set piece), and our own set pieces look better (for those whining about Mills "overhitting" corners, for almost every corner he took in the first half, Gorkks was coming in from the back of the six yard box - seems he's the target man, so perhaps Mills has been told to take them deep?).

I think the thing that concerned me the most was McDs apparent indecision around the substitutions - second time recently he's been about to make a change and the opposition have scored, leading to delay and seeming confusion regarding the changes. I fully don't understand this business of moving Karacan to right back, Jobi to the middle and Hunt to left wing to accommodate Manset, it just seems bizarre...add to that the fact that HRK was stripped and ready to come on at the same time as Manset, then the goal seemingly changed their mind, I don't get it - if we were chasing the game anyway, and a double change was initially considered appropriate, why would going another goal down make any difference? Given his record of making key changes last year, the seeming indecision that Brian has this year is somewhat worrying....

Still, on the whole, it feels like we're moving in the right direction, albeit slowly; just need to start scoring and we'll start to pick up points - 6 points from the playoffs today, three or four wins on the bounce and things could look a whole lot better....

So near but yet so far away from being a good team in this league. Whenever I've seen us recently, we look solid at the back. Great strike/fluke for the 1st yesterday. Kebe shouldn't have lost the ball where he did, but hold our hands up for a good strike. 2nd was a set piece, should have done better. Other than that, we barely looked troubles and Gorkss looks immense.

We hold a lot of possession in midfield and are applying lots of pressure in most games. Unfortunately, we're being found wanting in terms of final quality. We're miles off creating lots of chances. Le Fondre is proving himself a good finisher; he hasn't missed much since joining. But we're creating no chances for him. Indeed our goal came from him being on the wing.

Kebe is looking like a shadow of himself on the wing, and McAnuff hasn't stepped up to match the responsibility of the captaincy. Add to this losing the pace, strength and work rate of Long up front, and 2 central midfielders who aren't naturally creative, and I don't know where the chances will come from. I remember under Rodgers going through a spell of missing bag loads of chances every game; but what we have now is far more worrying. Nobody is getting chances. Hunt and Karacan came close yesterday, but I'd say even those chances weren't clear cut. It's not like they missed sitters.

And then there's set pieces. I can entirely see the case for Harte. Would he be worth a place in the team for set pieces alone? Based upon yesterday, yes. 18 corners, a free kick in a great position which McAnuff put in the wall. A few free kicks in dangerous areas. We never even looked like creating a decent chance from one of them. Mills was one of our best players yesterday, and MOTM against Brum. Harsh to drop him, but we need more from set pieces. Look how much more dangerous Cardiff were with Wittingham.

In a tight match, of which there will be plenty in this league, being able to bag goals from set pieces is a huge deal. With Kebe looking so poor and Mills looking good going forward, I think the suggestion of Harte at left back and Mills on the wing works. Mills will be good at tracking back and covering his lack of pace. I honestly think we would have won yesterday with a good set piece taker; we had so many chances to put balls in the box.

Add wingers on form and a decent set piece taker into our team, and we're a play-off side. Right now, we're mid table at best. With our lack of chances, I worry if we're even that.

Did I imagine it or did Mills force a great save from their keeper from a free kick early on?
We also had several corners which just needed better finishing....and as I said earlier, I suspect the long corners are playing to a game plan with Gorkks the target coming in from the back of the box....

Yes, McAnuff wasted one free kick, but i would say on the whole the set pieces were better than hey have been - people have such short memories - it wasn't so long ago that people were moaning that Harte was failing to clear the first man with a significant proportion of his corners....

18 corners and we lose the match, that says it all really.

I'd say if we had a more forward thinking Gylfi like attacking midfielder, training up Harte to sit in as a defensive midfielder or at least a position where pace isn't so important, might not be a bad idea.

Creativity + decent set pieces.

I'm an advocate of sacrificing Mills/McAnuff to get Harte in at left back if we think it's going to make a difference but I don't really back the idea of trying to convert a player in his mid thirities for the sake of it. I'd rather try the likes of Taylor first before resorting to that, especially if we don't think we'll be able to make a sustained promotion push this season.

1. Wingers; absolutely hopeless - again
2. Nothing different offered from the bench, as usual
3. Set pieces; well down to their usual standard
4. Cardiff first goal was a complete fluke
5. Referee was bad to say the least

Overall performance was determined and the players tried and with a little more luck we should have got something but that would only serve to mask the continuing deficiences.

Options open to management (none of which will be taken up)

1. Drop Kebe to the bench, move McAnuff to the right, move Mills forward and bring back Harte
2. Drop Hunt to the bench, move McAnuff more centrally into an attacking midfield position, move Mills forward and bring back Harte
3. Drop Hunt to the bench, move Kebe into a central role, pull McAnuff over to the right, move Mills forward and bring back Harte
4. Drop both Kebe and Hunt to the bench, move McAnuff more centrally into an attacking midfield position, move Mills forward and bring back Harte and also allow Obita or Antonio to pick up more experience on the right

By the way if you hadn't noiticed I'm all for bringing Harte back as we cannot go on wasting set pieces expecially as a large part of out game is, supposedly, to try and create set piece opportunities through wingers attacking full backs

However, the team at Ipswich I reckon will be the same that started on Saturday so expect more frustrating wastes of set pieces and probably a similar result.
