melonhead not all of the 7 million(+random numbers that you want to add on) are sensationalist tabloids and even if they were it wouldnt be 50% of the population which would be needed to warrant the "get the press we deserve" line

Daily Mirror : 1,143,778 ; -5.73
Daily Record : 298,010 ; -8.01
Daily Star : 681,268 ; -21.18
The Sun : 2,725,323 ; -8.37
Daily Express : 617,640 ; -6.37
Daily Mail : 2,008,817 ; -6.32

There's your 7 million.. (7,474,836 actually)

Which ones aren't sensationalist?

The remaining papers add up to 2,111,621 in total

http://www.nmauk.co.uk/nma/do/live/whyN ... eTypeId=25
Thirty-seven million people read a national newspaper every week, and 83% of UK adults read a national newspaper on a monthly basis. In the age of rolling 24-hour news coverage, national newspapers are read by 76% of adults in a week. This amounts to 33 million readers on weekdays and 30 million readers at weekends.

33 million readers on a weekday implies that 33*7,474,836/9,586,457 = 25,731,048 readers of tabloids per day based on those figures or 59.25% of adults in a week...

F*ck me, what is it with the mourning culture we have in this country? You can't just mourn someone you don't personally know, you have to be seen to be mourning them. There is only one thing worse about the need to mourn and to be seen to be mourning, and that is moaning about how people mourn - yes, I do get the irony, as that is precisely what I am doing myself - ooooh it's disrespectful to clap, ooooh it's celebrating their life how f*cing appropriate since he ended it of his own volition......can I just say, how little Gary Speed meant to me personally (although he did score against Reading in the Carling Cup QF in 96 and broke my heart. I since forgave). I am - however - sad that he died in such a way. I hope that the media don't hound his family to find out the truth that everyone - let's be f*cking honest here - is so desperate to find out.

So then, as for the reason why, the odds are as follows.

1 - Debts and imminent bankruptcy 12-1
2 - Divorce due to infidelity 8-3
3 - Sex Game gone wrong 5-1

lowerwestjnr This is just my opinion and i understand as i'm EDL etc..   it means nothing. But can't you pay your respects on here, twitter or what ever you please (Just like the Swansea fans), and just keep all your theorys or newspaper bullshit to yourselves? None of you know him, none of you know his personal life apart from hearsay and quite frankly none of the papars know. Let him lie in peace if thats what he decided he wants and remember him for the role model he was in his playing day?

No i am not oxf*rd EDL

Get the boy a box of tissues :!:

One of the best goalscoring midfielders in the Premiership during his long and successful carrer.

The number of tributes just show how popular Gary Speed was as a man.

Such sad news and ofcourse main thoughts go to his family and friends.

Royal Lady You posted it on a mutual friend's page. That's how I saw it. And I believe in letting someone rest in peace 24 hours after he's died, rather than speculating why he felt he found it necessary to end his life.

But you're happy to have a dig at the Swansea (&Villa) fans because of the way they showed their appreciation.

That's right. From my own personal opinion, I didn't believe it was respectful of them. If you note, none of the players (including one of his best friends) clapped - they obeyed the minute's "silence" that was requested. And TV coverage clearly showed it was pockets of fans clapping - not the whole lot of them. I just felt that if you're asked to pay your respects in a certain way, the least you can do is honour that request. As I said, they could have clapped and chanted Gary Speed, Gary Speed, Gary Speed all match if they'd wanted to.

You really are an idiot.

Not really, none of us knew the man

The TV tributes are rent-a-quote celebs giving an answer when asked "What are your thoughts about Gary Speeds death". Funnily enough, the more people you ask; the more tributes you get....

The more tributes you get, the more you trivialise their meaning

The only tributes that matter are the ones told direct to his family, by his true friends

But with a delay as all live TV now has thanks to Shaun Ryder

Would the report have been worse for being pre-recorded? Or forthem to cut to an advert?

Still let's watch someone who knew the guy grieving, so we can grieve too

It strikes me that someone who considered life so shit he'd top himself really wouldn't want people grieving over him

What state was he in when he did it? what was going through his head when he put the rope up and started securing it around his neck?
