Royal Lady no-one else bothered to put a reply to Spacey's question

It wasn't a question, it was a statement.

soggy biscuit What state was he in when he did it? what was going through his head when he put the rope up and started securing it around his neck?

He was probably reading one of Ideal's posts.

Man Friday
swansea jack You really are an idiot.

Maybe, maybe not. But she's completely right. I assume you were part of the 20% that clapped?

Doesn't matter whether it was 20% (it wasn't ftr) or 100%. They were paying their respects along with the Villa fans and the Villa bench.

I apologise to Royal Lady, perveyor of all things mute...you must love it at the MadStad as there seems to be 90 mins of silence at most games.

We wear a mask that grins and lies,
it hides our cheeks and shades our eyes.
The debt we pay to human guile,
with torn and broken hearts, we smile

Uke
The only tributes that matter are the ones told direct to his family, by his true friends

On that note, an emotional interview with Alan Shearer on Five Live, one of Speed's closest friends.

Alan shearer doesn't usually get emotional...but he is there not very nice listening. This has hit football pretty hard.

Thankfully 5Live appear to have moved on now. Well, nearly.

24 hours wall-to-wall was more than enough.

I think a lot of the comments about media intrusion, interest in his death, wall-to-wall coverage etc fail to grasp exactly why this is hitting so many people so hard, or has come as such a shock to many. If ever there was proof that underneath the Sheikh's billions, Chelsea's extravagance and bajillion pound TV deals, the heart of football beats strong, it's in the outpouring of grief and sympathy at Speed's death.

Football remains a big family and unlike other players that you might badge as 'troubled', or with known physical or emotional problems, Speed was outwardly the football everyman, a successful player and manager liked throughout the game, good looking, physically fit, and seemingly making strides into a new part of his career. Who does this terrible thing happen to, generally? Anyone but Gary Speed.

Sure, there is an intense voyeuristic media interest in what caused his death, but don't under-estimate the utter disbelief in the football community at what has happened, and ultimately that disbelief leads us to wonder quite what the hell happened to this poor man.

Lolz.

Like you're devoid of speculating.

Good job RL doesn't have DJ as a Facebook friend

"think there will be more chance of Gary Speed picking up some silverware this year than Reading making the play-offs"

That's my problem with suicide. There must be a moment when the darkness means you've tied the knot, taken the pills, whatever, where you think "have I done the right thing? I want to go back" and you can't. That is one hell of a moment of truth.

I have known two people personally who have killed themselves, and in both cases it was a psychological cocktail of lack of self-worth, depression and the need to scar/spite and prove ultimate and eternal worth to someone close to them that gives them the "strength".

I think that is why everyone is struggling to understand this. He didn't openly fit any of those criteria and everything seemed on the up. Hence my earlier reference to demons. We will never truly know and ultimately it doesn't matter. The world has lost a good guy and two children have lost their father. That's all that matters. RIP Gary.

melonhead not all of the 7 million(+random numbers that you want to add on) are sensationalist tabloids and even if they were it wouldnt be 50% of the population which would be needed to warrant the "get the press we deserve" line

Daily Mirror : 1,143,778 ; -5.73
Daily Record : 298,010 ; -8.01
Daily Star : 681,268 ; -21.18
The Sun : 2,725,323 ; -8.37
Daily Express : 617,640 ; -6.37
Daily Mail : 2,008,817 ; -6.32

There's your 7 million.. (7,474,836 actually)

Which ones aren't sensationalist?

The remaining papers add up to 2,111,621 in total

http://www.nmauk.co.uk/nma/do/live/whyN ... eTypeId=25
Thirty-seven million people read a national newspaper every week, and 83% of UK adults read a national newspaper on a monthly basis. In the age of rolling 24-hour news coverage, national newspapers are read by 76% of adults in a week. This amounts to 33 million readers on weekdays and 30 million readers at weekends.

33 million readers on a weekday implies that 33*7,474,836/9,586,457 = 25,731,048 readers of tabloids per day based on those figures or 59.25% of adults in a week...

Bah!

M-U-R-T-Y
floyd__streete F*ck me, what is it with the mourning culture we have in this country? You can't just mourn someone you don't personally know, you have to be seen to be mourning them. There is only one thing worse about the need to mourn and to be seen to be mourning, and that is moaning about how people mourn - yes, I do get the irony, as that is precisely what I am doing myself - ooooh it's disrespectful to clap, ooooh it's celebrating their life how f*cing appropriate since he ended it of his own volition......can I just say, how little Gary Speed meant to me personally (although he did score against Reading in the Carling Cup QF in 96 and broke my heart. I since forgave). I am - however - sad that he died in such a way. I hope that the media don't hound his family to find out the truth that everyone - let's be f*cking honest here - is so desperate to find out.

Absolutely agree.

maybe start a thread about it on AE then, this probably aint the place
