melonhead not all of the 7 million(+random numbers that you want to add on) are sensationalist tabloids and even if they were it wouldnt be 50% of the population which would be needed to warrant the "get the press we deserve" line

Daily Mirror : 1,143,778 ; -5.73
Daily Record : 298,010 ; -8.01
Daily Star : 681,268 ; -21.18
The Sun : 2,725,323 ; -8.37
Daily Express : 617,640 ; -6.37
Daily Mail : 2,008,817 ; -6.32

There's your 7 million.. (7,474,836 actually)

Which ones aren't sensationalist?

The remaining papers add up to 2,111,621 in total

http://www.nmauk.co.uk/nma/do/live/whyN ... eTypeId=25
Thirty-seven million people read a national newspaper every week, and 83% of UK adults read a national newspaper on a monthly basis. In the age of rolling 24-hour news coverage, national newspapers are read by 76% of adults in a week. This amounts to 33 million readers on weekdays and 30 million readers at weekends.

33 million readers on a weekday implies that 33*7,474,836/9,586,457 = 25,731,048 readers of tabloids per day based on those figures or 59.25% of adults in a week...

Bah!

TheMaraudingDog Reading to have a minutes applause tonight. Will be interesting to hear RL's stance on this.

You're such idiots sometimes.

If Reading have said there is to be a minute's applause - then that's fine.

Swansea asked for a minute's silence. Some people ignored it and decided to clap - like I said, in my opinion, that was wrong - because no-one really knew what to do then. So there was part clapping and chanting and part people wanting to respect in silence.

I'm not going to get in any more stupid arguments over this - fact is, as in other areas of life, people don't respect anything anymore, not even a request for silence.

I actually agree with RL here.

If you're asked to be silent for a minute to pay respects then I think you should adhere to that request and then mark it in your own way in your own time.

cmonurz I think a lot of the comments about media intrusion, interest in his death, wall-to-wall coverage etc fail to grasp exactly why this is hitting so many people so hard, or has come as such a shock to many. If ever there was proof that underneath the Sheikh's billions, Chelsea's extravagance and bajillion pound TV deals, the heart of football beats strong, it's in the outpouring of grief and sympathy at Speed's death.

Football remains a big family and unlike other players that you might badge as 'troubled', or with known physical or emotional problems, Speed was outwardly the football everyman, a successful player and manager liked throughout the game, good looking, physically fit, and seemingly making strides into a new part of his career. Who does this terrible thing happen to, generally? Anyone but Gary Speed.

Sure, there is an intense voyeuristic media interest in what caused his death, but don't under-estimate the utter disbelief in the football community at what has happened, and ultimately that disbelief leads us to wonder quite what the hell happened to this poor man.

QPR's captain has decided to take the high ground on this debate; it was due to selfishness apparantly.

"Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there".

Oh, and anyone who disagrees with what he has tweeted, or consider him insensitive, his Snowball-stylee response:

"Feedback on here, small minority as usual strongly disagree with what I said. If they read carefully or had half a brain, they'd understand,"

Nice one Barton.

Thing is, people only found out about an hour before kick off.......nobody really knew what to do, if he had died the previous day/week then the club could have ensured everyone knew it should be a minutes silence. I think those who started clapping were thinking "we should be celebrating his life, not mourning it" - considering the didn't know how he died.

Anyway i blame whoever first thought a minutes applause would be better than a minutes silence, if the first place.......

He was the Welsh manager, they're 20,00 Welsh people - who are we* to lecture them on how they pay their respects. It's hardly disrespectful to applaud and chant his name.

I agree, especially on the last bit, I find a minutes silence a lot more poignant than clapping although I can see why it's fitting in certain situations (I think the first was for George Best wasn't it? At least the first high profile instance I can recall).

They were specifically asked by the PA to observe a minutes silence though. That's why I think they probably should've just done as requested and then done their own thing. I don't think you need a whole lot of information or pre-warning to just do as asked at such a time.

So if the tannoy bloke had asked everyone to shout abuse then it would have been fine? When RL loses a family member or close friend does she call back the boyz and make some noyz to see what to do?

As has been said, mourning is an individual thing.

It's not really an individual thing when you're doing it as part of a crowd though is it?

I take TBMs shock excuse, but it's laughable to think that standing there clapping helped anyway deal with their grief any more than taking a minute to quietly reflect on a great career and what appeared to be a really decent blokes untimely passing.

If grief is such an individual thing, would it be appropriate for me to have run around the local remembrance service making machine gun noises to help me grief for the loss of a mate over in Afganistan because we used to play soldiers together in the woods?

Utterly pathetic that this debate is still rumbling on. 20,000 Welsh fans had just found out that a long-time Wales player, and their national team manager, had hanged himself. Small pockets of fans spontaneously applauded during the minutes silence. What the fcuk could possibly be found 'wrong' with that? Jesus.
