Cos it will mean teams will no longer play the long ball game that makes the PL the "best in the world"

No it won't, it'll just mean that there is a different focus and culture to the coaching of the coaches and the kids.

It won't change the way the we, as fans, demand committed and competitive football and I can't see that it would change different clubs, managers and groups of players playing to their different strengths and weaknesses.

It would be about improving on what we've got, not making all teams play in the same way and taking away the competitiveness of the league.

Thing is you need the top teams to buy in to it........cos this is where these kids will end up learning their trade. Spain are so good cos they use the Barcelona model, and play similar styles....

I don't think that's quite what the FA (or at least I) meant by influencing the coaching culture and style of the team.

I don't mean they had to set up a desired system and make all teams and academies produce players to fit into it. I think the idea would be to influence the development of the coaching framework and principles of how to produce good players of all types for all different systems. Good players are good players at the end of the day and what I'd be after was the national team manager (as the top man) consulting on what makes good coaches and good players.

uhm, honestly I can't say I have any idea what it is you describe as the Barcelona model.
But my impression is the youth teams here in Spain are insanely good.
Even the lesser teams require kids to be very, very good in order to get in their youth team. (By lesser teams, I mean teams that are what Ebbsfleet are to English football.)

People here are not rich. They don't all have playstations and laptops, not even the internet. That might have something to do with it.

There was a programme, on 5live i think, talking about Spain "buying" in to the Barcelona model, adapting the same style of football that was being taught at such a young age.....so for years to come whoever is managing either side were playing the same and the youngsters were learning it. Now more and more sides in Spain are starting to adopt the same style of football, in order to aid the national team as well as their own.

In England, unless you are big and strong you are overlooked by clubs.....

20 years ago that would've be a lot more correct than it is these days TBM. I don't think it's quite the case these days though (although there will always be examples of talented kids, and small ones at that, who don't make it for various reasons)

Our youth system has come a long long way in terms of the type of players it produces, in my opinion of course.

As for the 'Barcelona model', I'd go along with what you say for the most part. Spain have basically decided to play the way that Johan Cryuff wanted to get Barcelona to play, the modern equivalent of the total football he and his Dutch teammates played in the '70s.

I'm not sure the Spanish youth system is designed to mimick that as such. I think they've just made the most of the way Barcelona have churned out a succession of excellent players.

Capello Out? Why? You'll do well enough in Euro 2012 with him. He might well get you to the s-f and then, who knows? Nine times out of ten, I would suggest that Spain and (especially) Germany will be too strong for you, but that has precious little to do with Capello - that's history, mentality, players available and the Premier League, but, in a semi-final, who knows?*

Germans don't seem to think you have a chance though, I have to say.

*I have used, again, far too many commas in this post.

It would be great if he goes.

Beckham for manager, with Stewart Pearce to help him, or the other way round.

I've long thought that Beckham is being lined up to do something once he fully retires from LA Galaxy. He'd need to do all this coaching badges etc though.

I liked Terry Venables personally - thought he did a pretty fair job. Maybe he could have a role in overseeing the likes of Pearce/Beckham in the early years.

As much as I don't really like the guy, the verdict this morning probably clears the way for him to take over...whether that's before or after the Euro's remains to be seen.

If he basically takes the job at the end of the season and takes them to the Euros it may just give the team the same kind of boost as replacing the manager mid season does
