I went to the game. Arsenal fans were actually singing a bit more than usual. Some shocking finishing on the pitch as I'm sure you would have seen. Pretty drab affair overall though.

West Ham-Southampton was way more exciting and every premiership game seems a bigger occasion. If English clubs are going to lose, there doesn't seem much point to the Champion's League any more.

I sincerely have Arsenal sympathies RR and I can really appreciate what Wenger does/has done and how well Arsenal are generally run, but is it really possible to detect anything but decline? This was something of a low point. Arsenal lost last year to Barcelona but had a fighting chance very late into the tie - this year, there was a gulf in class, the likes of which I have rarely seen Arsenal on the receiving end of. Play this game again tomorrow night and I doubt it would make a difference. Wenger does not even speak about his 'project' anymore and I really cannot envisage Arsenal getting further in Europe over the years to come (or making the top 4 even) if things go on the way they currently do.

Mertesacker (as much as I liked him), Arteta, Park & Santos were Wenger's emergency buys late into August 2011 - this smacks of (well) Everton or (3-4 years ago) Spurs. Arsenal will not win a trophy this season in all probability (again) and that will mean 8 years (1971-1979) and I would be very surprised if Wenger survives that. He shouldn't.

Arsenal are really not a force anymore, not sure why RR can't see that. Don't understand this " boo-hoo" post he made at all...its a trend not a one off boo-hoo defeat. Arsenal have gone from being a dominant side to pushovers and barring van persie this season would be mid table at best. Arsene needs to spend money to get in 3/4 authoritive consistent European class players or let someone else come in. He's been a remarkable manager for them but its probably an end of an era.

I read somewhere that Arsenal are the most expensive season/matchday tickets in the world. For what? Only a matter of time people will answer with there wallets and stop paying there inflated prices for under achievment.

Agree with much of this, especially the gulf in class opening up between Arsenal and European competition. It’s a shame some of Arsene’s youngsters haven’t pushed on a little more, it’s been an honourable approach to managing such a big club to put so much faith in young players and it hasn’t quite paid off. That doesn’t detract from the fact that in full flow Arsenal are brilliant to watch and that is to Wenger’s credit. Isn’t it slightly hypocritical that the same fans who bemoan City spending their way to success also point fingers at Wenger’s approach?

Don’t see your point with Van Persie – sure if you take away his goals they’d be struggling, but he is part of the team so his goals count. Take away Ba’s goals and ‘Newcastle are shite’, take De Gea out of the United goal and they are already champions, and so on. It’s a pointless comment.

Boo hoo is a reaction to the hundreds of fans queueing up to vent their spleen on the football phone ins. They seem to think they have a God given right to win things because they are Arsenal. Well, like all but a couple of dozen clubs across Europe, they need to get used to the fact that without billionaire owners ready to sink money into the club, they just aren't going to compete for top honours anymore.

There's a bigger issue at Arsenal of course, and that is the absence of David Dein.

Can't say I've kept up with the implications of all the Football Finance regulations that are coming in.... how will they effect the top English clubs? Assuming Arsenal are still in that bracket, will their more prudent approach to finances in recent years give them an advantage over other clubs in the future?

but they remain, as ever, "flat track bullies", beating Blackburn 7-1 only recently, playing "beautiful, purring football". Scoring 5 at Stamford Bridge was good, mind.

They have always been found out when playing decent teams.

well, even when they were winning the Premiership, they could not win in Europe. Except against Finnish clubs, or something.

Why are people always comparing the two? - is it because they are both black, from Southampton and young?

They are difference players - Walcott relies on pace, wheras AOC is stronger, more skilful and prefers a more central role (behind the forward(s))

Anyway, Wenger either needs to splash the cash or Arsenal need to get someone else in...........thing is, who?
