He might have been played as a holding midfielder, my point is that he's a completely different kind of player to those that we currently have playing there.

My point is that those '2' were ball playing defensive midfielders, ala Pirlo (although obviously nowhere near as good), and we'd need to have similar players in there to be as successful if we were to revert back to it.

Fine, he may have tore up the championship, but the TEAM didn't. The TEAM were champions playing without Gylfi, in a 4-4-2.

He was very comfortable on the ball. Cummings is not.

Alf - Small, not particularly quick, no presence in the air. Hunt - Not smart enough in terms of movement, lacks pace. Roberts - Admitted the main reason he came to Reading was because we play 4-4-2.

Reading + Gylfi =/= play-offs, Reading - Gylfi = Champions. Hmmmm

PistolPete I am SHOCKED that no top 6 team has decided to buy Gylfi. Shocked.
Spurs could sell Modric for £30m and buy Gylfi for £7.5. Manchester United could give Gylfi one season to learn from Scholes, Arsenal are crying out for a player to feed RVP through the middle like Silva does for Man City, Liverpool simply need class, Chelsea are considering spending £30+ million on Lucas - an unproven attacking midfielder. IT JUST DOESN"T MAKE SENSE that a player, who has PROVEN his ability as Hoffenheim young player of the season and as Swansea's stand out player in a team that played top 6 style football, would be ignored.
He has a great attitude, he is at the perfect age and would be on lowish wages. I am lost for words.
Am I gutted? Yes! Not because we haven't signed him, he's out our league, but that Swansea will be the team that takes advantage - we lost by the width of a post to them 2 seasons ago and now look at them

winchester_royalpea Lol, it doesn't work because we've always called it the Gylfi formation and Brian tried numerous players in the role once he left and eventually gave up and brought Ledge in to play 4-4-2. The reason we haven't be able to play it is because we haven't had Gylfi or a like for like replacement, not because the rest of the team can't play the other roles, which aren't much different tbh

Wizard £7m is far too much to spend on one player. I don't think we should break our current top transfer record of about £2.5m, as no one who we've signed for a lot of money has been much good. We should stick to the current Reading way.

whilst i agree that no one weve bought for big money has turned out well, and that we should continue in our prudent way
i dont think just because other expensive players havent work will mean that none of them ever will

Extended-Phenotype Happy to be corrected, but in terms of ability I really don’t see enough difference between Gorkss and Mills to validate your point that 4-5-1 is out of reach because Matt Mills is a slightly better passer.

Gorkss is immeasurably better than Mills both as a footballer and a man.
Hoop Blah Couldn't care less if we'd need to change the system, or players around him, a bit to fit him in (we're going to have to do that anyway in order to compete in the Premier League). Watching Sigurdsson back in a Reading team would make games much more exciting and entertaining again and we'd have a better player back in our side.
If Swansea do manage to sign him and we haven't made an attempt to bring him here (formally or informally) then I'd be both disappointed and surprised. If none of the top/bigger sides do the same then I'd be amazed.

I do see your point, we're bound to get lucky one day. I just quite like the fact we have such a low transfer record compared to everyone else and don't see a need to change that at the moment.
