Ian Royal I think you can trust in Bri and Nick and still express disappointment that we don't seem to be busting a gut to try and make this happen.

Don't you think that if Brain and NH thought that Gylfi was the player we needed, the we WOULD be busting a gut to make it happen?

People were shouting about why it wasn't us that got Gylfi when he first came to Swansea on loan, we got Roberts instead and, oh, won the Championship.....

You either trust the club, or you don't - on our recent track record I'm erring on the side of trust....if that means that Gylfi isn't coming to us, then so be it....

Spot on.

Royal Rother What the hell is an "ambitious budget" anyway? I guess it's one where if it doesn't work you're a bit financially fcuked for the next few years. A gamble in other words. That is not how Reading FC has been run in the past and, by all accounts, is not how we will be run in the future with TSI.

Ambitious budget eh? What a nonsense term.

I'd agree, it is a bit of a nonsense term, but you're the one that endorsed it by agreeing that the original term was part of the proof that anyone who thought we were lacking ambition was a bit dim.

It really depends on why we aren't apparently busting a gut to make it happen.

Most of this discussion is based on assumptions of course, but I don't assume that us not bidding doesn't mean McDermott wouldn't want Sigurdsson back. Now that might be wrong of course, but I just don't get the impression that we're just not interested because we don't want him.

SCIAG
ZacNaloen Thing about Gylfi is, what is it that football fans see in him that the big clubs obviously don't?

Man U fans had a banner up saying buy sigurdsson when he played at OT, commentators were wetting themselves over him... but no big clubs want to take the risk at 7 mill?

Strikes me as a bit odd, especially considering the money they've spent on very average english players recently. Gylfi is better than most of them and counts as home grown. Brucey bonus.

Sorry, what "very average" English players have Man United signed? Are you talking about Liverpool?

United seem to have gone with Kagawa, who is maybe a bit more versatile and provides marketing opportunities Sigurdsson doesn't.
Man City, Spurs and Chelsea have Silva, Van der Vaart and Mata respectively, Sigurdsson wouldn't get in the side (particularly with Marin arriving at Chelsea to play left wing).
Arsenal have Ramsey, whilst Sigurdsson is better, he isn't £7m better.
Liverpool are managerless, and there's only really a place for Sigurdsson if Suarez leaves.

I'm really surprised Newcastle didn't come in for him, and to be honest I'm surprised Hoffenheim accepted £6.8m (only £200k more than they paid for him). But well done Swansea, an excellent player who will be utterly crucial for them.

I think Samuelson's promise that we wouldn't need to sell players turned into "we're going to sign Gylfi back" in a lot of people's heads, mine included, because we'll probably never have the opportunity to sign a player of his quality for such a good fee. In Brian and Nicky we trust.

Clubs don't just buy for the first team in the immediate present/short term though. They buy to have different options and competition in their squads.

Sigurdsson would be a great addition to almost any squad in the division. He might not walk straight into another team like he should do at Swansea (or Reading), but he would give them another string to their bow.

Re Newcastle, if you're ruling out Spurs etc for players they've already got playing the similar role then you could just as easily rule out Newcastle for Ben Arfa.

If I was a Swansea fan... I'd be concerned about the silence that has echoed over the deal now. With an imminent takeover of one of their closest competitors (us), I would of thought they would have been dragging Gylfi through the door then making sure he signed on the dotted line before we can starting sniffing. That he hasnt, can only provide me with hope. If we can get Siggurdsson, Mariappa, and Rhodes (with Morrison obviously coming good), I would be more than confident of staying up. I'd go as far as saying a Europa League spot wasnt out of the question

Or it could be that when Swansea say something will be signed "next week" they actually mean it.

Oooofff!

I guess it's just more nonsense when you're disagreeing with it instead of using it to support your argument.

If today's reports of Saints spending £6.5 million on Jay Rodriguez are true does that mean that they are being reckless for spending so much on one player or just ambitious?
Gylfi in that short period at Swansea showed that he is up to Premier League level and well worth what Swansea are paying.
Also the player might just feel better about how Swansea play.

agreed, no way is rodriguez worth that. hes not worth half that!!

on the other hand Sig is well worth what Swansea are paying and he's proven at that level - i think he will go to a big club in a year or two anyway

Who gives a stuff really?

The club does not lack ambition. Those who believe recent events suggest the club does are a bit dim imo.

An ambitious budget is a crap term imo. Whoever came up with it first.

Pick the bones out of that to your little heart's content my friend.

He looks good in the Champ, but I'd question whether it is wise for a promoted team to spend so much on one player who is unproven in the PL.

I know there's more to footie than goals but you'd think he needs to score 8-10 in the League to be termed any kind of a success next season. Big ask I'd say.

But neither a sign of recklessness or of any high ambition (to answer your original question).

Hey, you're the one that agreed with it, I just re-quoted it as I didn't think it had much founding in reality as yet.

I'm yet to see any tangible signs of this ambition to further improve the club, but I'm sure the likes of Hammond and McDermott share the fans hopes for the club to move forward irrespective of the signings or capital investments we make. If that means you think my perspective is dim then so be it, I just rather deal in reality than swallowing up all the PR that comes out of the club.

Rumours that Rodgers might be thinking about talking to Liverpool.. That could stall this deal.......

And that's where he (Gylfi) should be. Too big for Swansea, too good for us.

If this happens, Liverpool fans should be very happy (they won't be though)

Perhaps we could have Adam as a softener. (oops wrong forum)

HB - Ambition.

"An eager or strong desire to achieve something, such as fame or power..."

Ambitious.

"having a strong desire for success or achievement; wanting power, money, etc."

Maybe I'm just being way too literal but I think we've got all that in abundance and I don't think the amount of money we spend on players has any bearing on it.
