weybridgewanderer The SKY SPL contract is not renegotiated every season, but the contract states 4 Old firm games a season

As a result of the SPL not being able to meet that contractual requirement it will be renegotiated.

In that case, apologies to Schards and substantial LOL @ me.

Rather bigger LOL @ the SPL negotiating such a mickey mouse contract

I've still not seen any evidence that the sky contract stipul8s 4 OF games per year, what if one of them didn't make the top 6?

Interesting stuff

"The arrogance was unbelievable,” said one chairman. “The atmosphere hardened immediately. Charles Green conducted himself well enough but the Rangers chairman was arrogant and dogmatic.”

I think the phrase "short-term commercial considerations, that would ordinarily drive behaviour" tells you all you need to know about football these days

Also, LOLz @ the supporters trust bloke crying about the decision being made out of malice, so there's nothing else you can think of?

The Scottish Premier League has agreed a television deal with Sky Sports and ESPN which will run until the end of the 2016-17 season. They will pay a combined £80m to continue to screen 30 live SPL matches each per season. The figure represents an increase of £3m a year on the existing broadcast agreement due to end in 2014.

Central to the deal is the continuation of four Old Firm matches each season. This removes the possibility of the meaningful expansion of the 12-team SPL for which supporters have campaigned.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011 ... l-sky-espn

This was the whole discussion why league expansion to 16 or 18 teams failed. SKY want their 4 old firm games and that could not happen with a bigger league

So what if rangers or Celtic finished in the bottom 6?

Probably a calculated gamble that it wouldn't happen, and in such an unlikely scenario I can't imagine the TV company would demand any sort of money back or cancel the deal.

That's not the same as a condition of the contract.

As SFers says, what if one of the OF were in the bottom six or even relegated (on results)?

I don't see how SKY can renegotiate a deal that lasts four years when there is no guarantee, at the time of entering the deal, which clubs will be present in seasons two three and four.

OK< how about this link then

Is it going to take a copy of the contract to convince you?

The Scottish Premier League’s new television deal with Sky is dependent on both Celtic and Rangers participating in the competition.

STV understands the broadcaster has negotiated a termination clause in its contract with the league, should either side no longer be in the division.

The most recent deal agreed for TV rights, which will see the SPL receive £80m over five years starting next season, is yet to be signed and is currently going through the required legal process before it is ratified.

The existing Sky deal, which expires at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, stipulates there must be four Glasgow derbies per season.
The last Glasgow derby, played in December, attracted an audience of more than one million viewers.
