That photo is from the same year as this album from the Guardian today

For some reason that seems totally nuts to me.

Alexander Litvinenko
Norfolk Royal ....
The consensus appeared to be that following the advent of Brylcream and men wanting an actual hairstyle, blokes stopped wearing hats. If there are any other takers on that theory I would be glad to entertain it.

I always thought it was when cars got smaller (too small to wear a hat in) and more and more people started using them - but common lore says "Kennedy killed the hat" when he was the first US president who didn't wear one and it caught on from there.

With the benefit of hindsight he would have been better off swapping his hat for a ballistic helmet!

Apologies if anyone finds that offensive.

Hats died because they're crap and either make you look about 20 years older than you actually are or like a whippet fancier from Dewsbury.

SPARTA Didn't know where to put this as it doesn't deserve it's own thread, but it's nice to see the club now starting to acknowledge and show some pride in the clubs past, rather than appear embarrassed by it since the move to Madejski Stadium. Who'd have thought we had a past pre 1998?

Nice touch!

Tell Bob it's not level..

On a more serious note I hear there have been a number of redundancy notices issued recently

Always the way, sadly - lower crowds and less money means fewer jobs can be supported. No matter than some of those being made redundancy only earn in a year what some of the players earn in a single week, it's them that the axe falls on.

Yes, the car theory was ruled out in my discussion but the Kennedy one is one I haven't heard.

Given what happened to Kennedy, he's not a great advert for either not wearing a hat or being driven in cars with no roof.

Royal Rother This is an old photo (1913) that would look good somewhere in the club.

I wonder how many Nobbers' (Great) Grandads are in there....?

Hats were obviously an essential fashion accessory of the time! Can't see any replica shirts though.

I might honour the centenary of this picture by wearing my flat cap and miserable face to the first home game of the season. Then go home and beat up the Mrs

Is the bloke in the middle of the front row wearing a cap or a strategically placed helicoptor landing pad?

The little lad 4 from right on the front row appears to be impaled upon one.

Z175 How likely our the FA to award little Reading category 1 academy status if they are lower-league? (I think the delay in rating is seeing if we stay up)

Utter rubbish...the delay is because we're being given more time to put the required facilities in place (or at least demonstrate capability to put them in place within an agreed timeframe)....

Any club can achieve CAT1, regardless of the division in which they're playing, as long as they have all of the pre-requisite facilities and meet the required spending and staffing ratios...

Is now a good time to quote this?

Reaching the top category required a huge investment in terms of time, effort and finance, and all of that work has paid off as our club has been confirmed as one of the very best in the land. Nick said, "An enormous amount of work has gone in from an enormous amount of people, and it's really important that the supporters recognise what a big achievement this is, and what a big statement it is from the club.

"It was a big decision to have an Academy many years ago, and people will realise that was a correct decision. The same point remains here, it's a big commitment by the club but it allows us to compete at the highest level in youth football, to attract players and to progress. I'm delighted."

Some of those gone had been there since the stadium was opened.

Some interesting quotes here. Comparisons with Spurs and Everton are ambitious, perhaps overly so, but he seems like a man with a plan

And to his credit, he's been a man of his word thus far. It all looks very positive for the club. But the key is getting back to the Premier League.
