Readingfanman Unless anyone can tell me what the academy cost currently to run before receiving this Catergory 1 status, then saying it's investing in the academy is pointless really. For all we know, the academy was previously costing £2M anyway.

Magic Hat I can't find any breakdown of what the operational budget includes. I imagine that the 18 staff wages , scholar wages and facilities running cost and maintenance will be the bulk of it, but I don't know why the minimum budget is part of the criteria. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Because the PL will subsidise the excess cost on (ISTR) a 2:1 ratio, so the total annual cost of a Cat One academy is £6.975M a year. Clubs need to be able to commit to paying their 1/3rd share in order to get the PL's 2/3rds share. (I think it was 2:1 - I need to dig out some paperwork I've got on it somewhere).
That's just an estimate made at the time EPPP was voted through, though, not a hard and fast figure, and will almost certainly have gone up in the 2 years since then - for instance there's been a shortage of properly-qualified coaches so I bet their cost has gone up.
Also, one of the big criticisms of EPPP is that there was only a PL commitment to fund it for the first 3 years. The assumption is that it'll be renewed, but there's no guarantee of that.

Someone at the game today told me that there is a clause in the purchase contract that states if the 2nd payment is not paid by the due date then SJM can buy the club back for £1.
Anyone know anything about this?
