anything to get Guthrie playing further forward.
his range of passing is wasted when he is so deep.
if he has the freedom to play in the opposition 3rd I can see a lot more chances created.
he tends to sit back in order to pick the ball up from the CB's and then has no options in front of him.

Rfc1987 Horrible to see one of our best and hardworking midfielders go down to a horrific injury last night, wish him a speedy recovery but looks very bad. Ledge is almost fit again whilst akpan did okish when coming on but i feel people thought he had a bad game due to his inexperience. Akpan missed alot of potential good passes and when he got a yellow card he started to pull out of tackles. I feel ledge could do a very decent job in the midfield this season as what he lacked last year was support and with the likes of williams around him i feel he could do very well as karacans replacement.

Thoughts?

my thoughts are that all the nobs criticising akpan for "cowardice" are totally forgetting he was carded early, and with bugger all midfield options on bench im certainly happy he was more careful

for his first real game this year, and having to come on without warm up etc, he did pretty well.

maybe it was just that he did better than i expected, but everything IS relative, so.....

and plus one on hoping ledge gets fit very soon

thats where he likes to play, and he got all gay about it when asked to play in a more attacking role previously

Was he? I don't recall that and the BBC site says he wasn't. Could have missed it though in all the excitement.

Yeah that's Guthrie's position of choice, picking balls of the defenders and playing balls from deep or pushing forward.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't work playing him alongside Ledge. It would be a case of when Ledge dropping back when we are off the ball and playing the simple ball when he has it. He can even push forward when Guthrie is collecting the ball of the centrebacks.

I must admit there were several times last night when I found myself wishing we had a fit Ledge available. Obviously the karacan injury underlines that. I think he could really bring something to the team.

Yeah Warnock was sent off when he gave away the foul that we scored from. Guthrie was booked early on in the game, I'm not sure Akpan was.

I didn't see the card either, thought they were just making a time-wasting sub!

I took down some notes 'cause I'm a sad oxf*rd and also have nothing for Akpan. My cards match up with the same on BBC site.

New FiFA rules state:

"...if a player performs below an acceptable standard at home he can be considered to have received an automatic yellow card for lack of effort."
