.. yesterday's review of 'local' NL

Saturday 11th January 2014

FA Trophy R3

1 Cambridge United 2-2 Luton Town
2 Aldershot Town 3-0 Guiseley
3 Hungerford Town 0-1 Gosport Borough
4 Eastleigh 3-2 Dover Athletic
5 Tamworth 1-1 Chorley
6 Lincoln City 0-4 North Ferriby United
7 Grimsby Town 2-1 Maidenhead United :(
8 Havant & Waterlooville 1-0 Ebbsfleet United

CONFP
Kidderminster Harriers 3-0 Salisbury City
Woking 1-0 Braintree Town
CONFN
Brackley Town 3-1 Gainsborough Trinity
Colwyn Bay 1-1 Oxford City
CONFS
Basingstoke Town 0-0 Bath City
Boreham Wood 5-0 Dorchester Town
Bromley PP Eastbourne Borough
Chelmsford City 0-2 Sutton United
Concord Rangers 3-1 Hayes & Yeading Utd
Farnborough 1-2 Staines Town
Weston-Super-Mare 2-1 Tonbridge Angels

SOUTHP
Burnham 3-1 Bedford Town
Chesham United 2-1 Biggleswade Town
SOUTH1C
Beaconsfield SYCOB 2-0 Ashford Town (Middx)
Chalfont St Peter 2-2 AFC Hayes
Chertsey Town 0-2 Northwood
Egham Town PP Daventry Town
Marlow 2-2 Slough Town att 261
Uxbridge 1-3 Royston Town
- was at Oak Tree Road with youngest yesterday - didn't fancy a long drive somewhere new, so hung on until his Swimming lesson had finished - which wasn't on anyway.
So I could have gone somewhere new for both of us, albeit would have been a bit lower down the Pyramid. He willingly gave up his usual PM slob in front of godawful tele or playing on the Wii; with the understanding he could pick somewhere with decent food.
... and there aren't many better at this level than Marlow :) - he wasn't disappointed either. Thoroughly enjoyable local 'tussle' twixt 'Blues' and 'Rebels' - home side were the brighter and more incisive with the ball but Sluff are far cannier - having been at or above this level for a fair few years. Game could have gone either way in truth - both opening goals were classic keeping howlers - rushing out at through balls and hoicking nowt but fresh air! Marlow came from behind to lead before HT - some very clever work from 'ex-Mole' Ian Davies earned a penalty. Davies and Romeo proved a thorough nuisance to the Slough back four all PM and Bartley worked very hard just in behind them. Visitors equalised with a smart finish early 2nd half. Slough certainly seem to miss the commanding presence of the departed Bowden-Haase (hope that's right) went 'down-under' late last season.
Marlow brought on Jon Bennett (ex-Yellamen) late on and he rattled the bar from range. Yet another ex-Mole took to the pitch near the end - this time Cornell recently joined Slough - also came close to snatching a win but a draw was a fair result.

SOUTH1S&W
Bishops Cleeve PP Didcot Town
Bridgwater Town PP Godalming Town
Cirencester Town 2-2 Fleet Town
Evesham United 5-0 Thatcham Town
Guildford City 3-2 Clevedon Town
North Leigh 0-1 Taunton Town - that makes 6 defeats in a row for Nor Lye - have fallen back to 6th well off the pace now.

CCLP
Alton Town 3-1 Windsor Windsor evidently had some 'minor issues' (see above) with the ref .... and the supposed issuing of a ‘Pink Card’ ?
They have just lost Ben Harris - gone off to ‘The Beavers’ – scored in injury time yesterday v Carshalton in a 4-0 win. Still, at least they ought to recover some form at Cove this Tue night (surface permitting) - home side have a league record of 0-1-7 F6 A 22 in front of their own 'crowd' this season. Nice bar there too - providing its not hosting a Bikers meeting, as it was last time I went - 'hairy' definitely the word! :?

Badshot Lea 1-2 Cove
Camberley Town 3-0 Croydon - home side now on a run of 12 wins in 13 and have soared up to contention in 3rd place behind E&E - who themselves bt in-form Farnham - and current leaders South Park who were rained off.
Colliers Wood United 2-0 Westfield
Epsom & Ewell 3-2 Farnham Town
Frimley Green PP Bedfont Sports
Hanworth Villa PP Raynes Park Vale
Horley Town 1-1 Hartley Wintney
Mole Valley SCR PP South Park
Molesey 1-1 Chessington & Hook United
Wembley 2-0 Ash United
CCL1
AFC Croydon Athletic 2-0 Sheerwater
Banstead Athletic PP Worcester Park
Bedfont & Feltham PP Farleigh Rovers
Dorking 1-3 Eversley & California (@ Eversley & C.) – Dorking have issues with their Meadowbank ground:
“ The League agreed that for the remainder of this season that Dorking could play their remaining home matches at any reasonable senior ground.”
– the league are however, evidently somewhat flustered by this, as they posted up yesterday’s result (played at Eversley) the wrong way round!
NB E&C still having issues with a local resident (if I’ve read the Forum correctly, rumoured to be Will Carling?) objecting to their new floodlights – therefore yesterday’s match kicked off at 14:00.

Epsom Athletic PP Cobham
Sandhurst Town PP South Kilburn
Staines Lammas 2-2 Knaphill

Decent read this about 3G pitches. Could be a ticking time bomb for some clubs then?

No. It wasn't there when i posted! But a simple bit of maths shows in this day and age it'll still be pretty hard for a lot of clubs to get 1k a week from it. That said i 've heard Maidstone hire it out 40 hours a week which is just fantastic!

Is there any lists of clubs with 3G pitches now? Would be interesting to see how/if they are making money from it.

Windsor back to winning ways in the CCL Premier last night (Tue) - much as I'd expected, at Cove, who are bewilderingly inept at home.

I popped down to Squirrels Lane, to watch a game of quite a few chances on a boggy surface, in horrible drizzly conditions. Away side ran out 4-2 winners. Michael Buck and Callum Eagles, both recently of RTFC, I think, were in the home back-line who performed as porously as ever.

Elsewhere - few games survived but leaders South Park won 3-0 at MVSCR - don't think they'd played in nearly a month - certainly not in the league.

Further up the Pyramid: in Conference South - Basingstoke went down 1-3 at the Camrose to Whitehawk and Farnboro were beaten 0-1 at home by Ebbsfleet.

In the Southern Premier: Burnham W1-0 v Hitchin - there were no other 'local' fixtures that survived the weather - though Beaconsfield SYCOB did bt North Greenford 3-2 on Monday night.

I do like my tea in a china cup so be it boggy or foggy, Cove still gets a thumbs up from me.

Must say I rather enjoyed the game last night.

From the Windsor Observer....

"Michael Broadley this week described it as garish and disgusting, and stressed his concern that it will bring the club and town into disrepute. “I was shocked and saddened by the new kit, which shows the players looking like circus clowns in bowler hats,” the ex-Windsor & Eton chairman told the Observer.

“Defacing the Union Jack in this manner, particularly by a club where the Duke of Edinburgh was patron for many years, is disgusting and brings the club and town into disrepute. “For Kevin Stott to claim the kit is breaking the mould and will help market Windsor across the country is a joke. Even worse I believe that a car will be offered for sale painted in the garish Union Jack design.”

Great stuff!

I hear that he was about 100 times less popular than Keith Scott. Is this true?

It's been a while since the song about him has had an airing...

I mostly agree with him though! It's not gone down well with people i know who have a passing interest!

But why are the paper looking for his views? I don't get it. Local papers surely want to keep clubs a bit sweet especially when there is two local papers clubs can deal with? Or is it part of the whole any publicity is good publicity viewpoint?!

This, entirely. Publicity is one thing and I think that this has been well and truly achieved. I don't particularly like the home shirts but how much of that is down to tyhe lighting? They may look much better in daylight or even under floodlights. But why someone who for years would announce himself as "I am Chairman of the Hellenic League" would want to get involved is beyond me. What was that song? I might see if it can be aired tomorrow - weather permitting. :D

.. nothing 'dry' about this weeks list :| - not many surviving 'locally' ... left it very late to get the most up to date declarations of Postponements as full as poss.

- ... and I won't try and bore anyone with any 'twiddly bits' then - either .... :(
