Terminal Boardom Do BBCRB still ignore NL football?

...certainly don't have the round-up in depth as I'm sure they used to have a few years back - Adie often chats with Jason B and Drax after their CONF-South games on Sat PMs but presumably they don't have time to 'go lower' unless one of our local sides does well in a Cup competition - believe they've mentioned Diddy and Hungerford in passing but its rare.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Decided against battling along the M4 last night - was considering a visit to Staines v Magpies - slightly pleased I wimped out as it ended 0-0. :D
Ended up much closer down at Hartley Wintney - on another gluepot pitch as they beat CCLP basement side Bedfont Sports 5-2. Elsewhere there's a thread on odd co-incidences - I chucked something in a bin - glancing after it and noticed discarded within a perfectly good programme from HW's game at the w/e A v Horley. hardly co-incidental BUT I visited Horley just the once 5-6 years ago when they played that season's champions in the last match of the season (Merstham/Chipstead - can't recall) but nagging source of regret that they'd run out of programmes on the day!
... just a little thing to cheer me up! :D
Guernsey player Richard Powell given a 2 year ban (possibly, quite rightly) for a head-butt during an GFA Cup fixture back in November.
Should've bit him instead Richard......cue the GFA/FA differing standards...for what is basically, a vile event
... now , there's a thing - went to Hartley Wintney a couple of season's back - and there was a ex-Royals striker, slightly older/slower/rounder, Martin Williams now back in Central Mid as skipper & pulling the strings as you'd expect for one of a loftier past. He'll always be 'Skittles' to me 8) but he was being called 'Willo' by all and sundry on & off the pitch.
Banged in a very late equaliser in that match H v Guernsey too - with a classy driven swerving free-kick, which I think - true to his 'nickname' that I was more familar with, he'd 'earned' on the edge of the box. :wink:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
....unsurprisingly Postponements starting to come in early to save some longer trips:

SOUTHP Truro v Hungerford OFF

.... expect with the amount of rain out there now, we'll see plenty more gone locally tomorrow AM. :(

And I watched Martin Williams play for Windsor and Eton about 5 years ago. He had 2 or 3 seasons there.

At that level he was class, but dodgy knees meant he couldn't really train so eventually he moved on / retired (obviously not though!).

And yes, he was Willo at Windsor. The W&E fans were politely amused when I told them him his nickname at Reading.

... evokes another lasting memory - this time of 'quiet George' ; a stalwart of us lot, up the back few steps of the ''Toilehurst End'' yonks ago at EP. George was never one to shout or rant or cheer or boo .... or speak very much at all truth be known, though he had a way with the odd pithy quip. (Not even sure his name was actually George - it's just what we knew him as - still have a nodding acquaintance with him when we occasionally cross paths outside the MadStad after the game) ....

Anyway - on one memorable occasion - probably early 80s - Jerry Williams -who'd finally carved out a regular starting position for himself at RB - as opposed to sub-forward/winger - caused George to became increasingly agitated.
He'd progressed up the field from very deep on a mazy run, albeit at Glenn-Little-like-pace. His cries of encouragement (Go on, Jerry, Go on! etc etc) grew uncharacteristically loud & louder as he approached the opposition penalty area: - only ending in a final very un-PC outburst of disappointment - with a painful prolonged deafening howl of ''SPASTIC!'' (sorry!) - when our young hero managed to shank the ball way over the Burger Kiosk up at the back of the stand. - I think someone had to go down into the Hades-like Gents under the stand to retrieve the ball - not sure they wanted it back! :?

...wasn't long after, that Jerry looked as if he might be about to repeat the trick and with half of us eyeing up how George would react - on this wonderful cusp of excitement - THIS time our beloved Jerry managed to ping the ball from wide out on the right, like a bullet across the keeper and into the far top corner of the net ! :D

Can't believe he made 300 + appearances for us - though he was here for 12 years starting as 16 yr old.

... and incidentally Jerry W turned out for Windsor (& Eton) well over 20 years ago - after a brief spell with the Sh!ts.

V. Early 90's I would've seen him, 92/93????.

Windsor were relatively big-league non-league then...their biggest concern was hating Conference League Slough Town iirc. JW was still a class act, but time was telling on him, very much his downward spiral moment.

My car-share, "Evo" Richard Evans was their top scoring #9 then, he went on to trials with John Becks Cambridge United before finally getting sold onto Sutton Utd only to score a hat-trick against a full strength Tottenham side in a pre-season friendly (which incidently made a two inch feature on the back page of the NOTW the next day).

With local W&E crowds of 400+ there was even a footballing life outside of the pro game

20 years + well hell yes

And with postponements in mind, Hartley Wintney v Windsor is off. If anyone wants to experience non league football at its most interesting, I would recommend Hanworth Villa v Eastbourne in the Vase. Highly recommended even if some of the guys down there are big into Chelsea - and not in a nice, gentlemanly way if you get my drift.

Wonder how many games that kicked off finished?! :shock:

Interesting to see Ryan Bird, Ex Burnham, scored on his debut on loan at Cambridge. Would Cambridge of even considered him if he was still in non league? Doubt it!

... a fair number started and didn't make it much beyond H/T

- including the one I opted for up north of Aylesbury at South Mids One: Winslow 4-1 Langford abandoned on 45'.
- away side rock-bottom and only turned up with one sub, were reduced to ten men on about 1/2 hr by two injuries - so probably weren't keen to emerge from the dressing room after half time.
Really came down in torrents across the Chilterns and on the way home hit a real 'ford' like puddle up between Xmas Common and Nettlebed - fortunately nothing coming in the opposite direction - couldn't believe the water was settling so high up!

Spelthorne Sports 4-0 Dorking
Staines Lammas 6-1 Sandhurst Town

HELLP
Highmoor Ibis A-A Newbury 70’ – seemingly more behind this by some accounts. H/I down to 8 men – and generally lost all discipline.
– reportedly a lot of intimidatory behaviour directed towards opposition and a young Ref from the home side.
– Assessor in attendance too so may be some follow-up– not sure how much of this is being borne along by the general ill-feeling the rest of the league’s supporters have towards the Palmer Pk outfit. I’d proffer that a lot of it is the usual ‘Chat Room jealousy’ towards a side having an unexpectedly good season and challenging for top spot
.

Conference rejects 3G pitches. Early adopters Maidstone done over. Southern/Ryman Prem sides surely not going to go for 3G now then.

Where's FoC?

No inspection planned at Stag Meadow. Sun shining so should get a decent crowd if it stays that way as many games will be called off already.

... as usual grabbing time between shifts of Dad's Taxi Runs ... and a spot of the lurgy my youngest kindly gave us from earlier this week! :cry:

Didn't post yesterday as I could see the rain intervening big time across the NL programme - will give my remaining list a quick run through and post what's left in an hour or so.

Looks as if I'm staying local - for one thing don't fancy driving a long way in the wet with a runny nose :mrgreen: - and the 'new' ticks further away have probably all 'gone' by now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wahey - IN before the Edit window... :D
here's what's survived at 10:00 AM - NOTE both CCL & Hellenic will probably have later call offs this AM - none (bar Windsor & Camberley) are hopeful in the Comb Counties and a raft of 'higher' NL clubs round here have called off in the last 1/2 hr. I wouldn't hold out much hope of the Southern league games going ahead either - will pop back in later and update if poss.
Looks like I'm in for the afternoon in too :cry:
