Pepe the Horseman If you're not going to take this seriously, I'd rather you didn't contribute.

P!ssed Off No, you can't have a goal without a goalscorer.
But you can have a goal without anyone credited with an assist. Therein lies the difference.

Good post, just been looking at the transfermarkt site to clarify this and looking at the last 2 big wins they have no assist for the 1st, 6th or 7th goals v Bolton (though Pog should have an assist for the Blackman goal). Also no assist for the first goal against Blackpool. The Pog assist is a slip-up, but generally I agree with the assists or not that they give on there.

You can also have two people credited with an assist for the same goal, albeit its fairly rare.

An example might be Jobi's (?) corner for Pearce's head back to ALF to head in.

No, I don't think so.

No, I don't think so.

Then you might be disappointed in the way most of the people who record assist stats do it.

Find me a recent case where 2 assists have been awarded for one goal then.

Simple, if two players are holding hands (lets say Gunter and McCleary) and one of them crosses to alf, who subsequently heads it home, then both Gunter snd McCleary get the assist.

melonhead gayest debate ever.
its not american football. you cant define the game by stats, no matter how hard you try. but...

McCleary to Le Fondre for the 1st goal was not a deflected pass anyway, it was a blocked shot. Why should he be given massive credit for having his shot blocked. That's not an achievement

Mcleary aimed his shot across goal, specifically because the percentages are better, and if you miss hit it slightly there will be a chance it may go directly, or rebound to the other striker at the far post, so....

In the first part, statistics are thrown out.

In the second ...

It's simply a case of how you use them. The clubs do use them, and they use specific ones. FWIW, by and large, only the TV and Snowball 'use' assists, simply "being involved in a passing move that leads to a chance" is the stat of choice for the clubs. Apparently, it is much more predictive.
