Ian Royal For anyone who didn't stay, Pearce was almost physically beating himself at the end with how shit he and we were. Despite resounding boos, roughly 5 minutes of seat banging before the final whistle and a resounding chorus of 'that was embarrassing' he still came over and clapped those left. And got the applause he deserved for doing it.

I thought the seat banging was coming from the Barnsley fans? They were certainly joining in.

I know it's a long way and a Tuesday night, but that's got to be the smallest away crowd in 3 or 4 seasons.

He should have played McCleary on the right, Jobi on the left & Taylor in the middle. At least players would be in their natural positions. He has fcuked up tonight IMO but even so, those players have no excuse for that shower of sh1t we all endured.

MmmMonsterMunch I don't usually defend the fans being negative but maybe the home truths that were chanted tonight might wake a few of the players up.

I am stunned at just how sh1t we were. I didn't think it was possible we could be that sh1t TBH. I suspected tonight might be a struggle & we might concede, but I still thought we'd grind out a win & get that monkey off our backs.

Didn't hear the interview - what did Adkins say?

He basically said we were completely shite. Not sure he could have said anything else and still kept a straight face.

No it was y25 and 26. All around me and sadly mainly grown men. Although hard to fault them given how poor we were this time.

The fake goal celebration along with the chants of "We're just too good for you" and "It's just like watching Brazil" cheered me up for a minute or so.

One of the worst home games ever in the history of the mad stad and I have seen pretty much every single one. Boos and shit I disagree with as doesn't help but more than deserved tonight I'm afraid although I just about refrained. The ownership crap needs to be sorted out or we are going to fire sale, youngsters and the way of Portsmouth. Please can the uk government do something as surely boris must have something to do with Crimea .........at least we might have a chance next season as this one is gone.

What formation were we playing? We had loads of wingers on the pitch but no width! Obita would pick it up and have no in front of him down the line. We should have stuck to 4-4-2 with drenthe on the left and mcleary on the right. Pog and alfie up front.

Why are the players not motivated? We are sat in 6th, surely they want to get promoted and a nice big payrise.

Why couldn't pearce and gorkss win any headers and compete with there forwards who were made to look world class? They then resorted to standing off them and giving them time and inviting the shot. Expecting them to miss.....

Manager and players should apologise for that shower of shite and adkins should shake things up to send out the message to the players who think the shirt is theirs.

4-4-2

Federici
Gunter
Morrison
Pearce
Obita
Drenthe
Akpan
Taylor
Mcleary
Alf
Pog

I'm finding it difficult to be too critical of Adkins, as due to injuries & suspensions I don't feel that he had too much choice with the team selection. Bridge, Morrison, Karacan, Williams & Guthrie all would have been improvements on the team today. Easy to say that the likes of Taylor should've started, but he hasn't particularly impressed in his cameos so I can't see how he would have been much improvement on Jobi. The players definitely need to take some responsibility for that performance.

Won't bother with ratings, I'll just give everyone a 5 as no one really deserves credit after that performance. Particular worries for me is that McCarthy's distribution and poor decision making seems to cost as many goals, as he prevents. I can't see him being a top flight keeper for a long time unless he improves it. The defence is all just hopeless at passing, although I do feel they're lacking the protection Guthrie/Karacan/Williams would provide. Pog barely won a header and his first touch let him down on numerous occassions. For someone in his role it's of utmost importance that he wins the battles and holds the ball up to bring others into play but thought the Barnsley centre backs had it way too easy today.

Defensively, these matches are gonna happen. One major balls up for the first goal, then two really well taken goals from them. Our attacking play was seriously stale.

No point giving numbers.

Very poor matches from Gorkss, Gunter, Akpan, McAnuff, McCleary, and Blackman. HRK too.
Le Fondre and Pogrebnyak basically out of it due to the poor midfield performance.
I couldn't see the second goal properly, but that aside Pearce had a relatively good match. He was basically untroubled, looked good on the ball, and was a real threat at set pieces.
Drenthe was alright, but not really good enough.
Obita was maybe a bit keen to hoof it, but who can blame him when his passing options are Gorkss and Akpan?
McCarthy made one big mistake and had no chance with either goal. Otherwise fairly untested.
The worst performers were the fans though. Booing Blackman was low. Widespread booing, seat banging, and claiming to be embarrassed was very low. The only thing I was actually embarrassed by was Y26. The constant moaning was not befitting a bunch of football supporters.

I think that showed how important Guthrie and Williams are for us. We need a proper midfield. Drop Blackman and Akpan (I know, predictable scapegoats) and get Williams and Taylor in. If Williams is not fit, Tshibola. Also bring in Hector for Gorkss, and Feds for McCarthy. Gunter's good form this season earns him another chance.

I'm the closest thing Blackman has to a fan, but he was not good enough today, and even on his good days he doesn't look like a first teamer. If he was out of contract he'd have no chance of earning another one. I'd seriously consider flogging him to League 1 for a nominal fee in the summer, maybe the wages could be used to sign next season's equivalent of Chris Baird.

Resisted the temptation to post over recent months on the basis I felt the views I held were prematurely thought out, with the tide about to turn at any point but I've finally convinced myself that the tide won't turn unless we actually start to play to our strengths.

1) The prime case in point is the back four, or more specifically the centre back pairing. Pearce and Gorkks, let's be frank about it, are bangers and mash defenders yet Adkins wants them to play like caviar and Champagne defenders.

2) Related to the previous point, we have a goalkeeper sat on the bench who is, actually, a bit of a footballer with great distribution. McCarthy, for all his excellent ability, has a quite alarming weakness in his game - his distribution. A major part of the Adkins masterplan is distribution from the back. How many times this season has McCarthy played an abysmally poor pass or throw out from the back to a man who is under pressure?

3) Full backs - all too easily defended at times. Gunter has a habit of making potentially catastrophic errors and will do so at least once a game, and is actually pretty weak in any kind of physical challenge. Obita, while still learning the role (let's give him plenty of time) is easily bypassed at times and allows his man in behind him far too often. Both are good when bombing forward but rarely do we see that particular strength utilised.

4) Midfield - desperately needs a Gylfi-like player just behind the front man that can actually play the role. Drenthe flatters to deceive, McAnuff isn't suited to it, Guthrie is better utilised in a deeper lying role (and isn't exactly fantastic at that either), Blackman just isn't Championship quality despite improving as the season has progressed. Desperately needed, but sadly missing.

5) Strikers - We simply don't have a partnership, and none of the strikers are really suited to the lone striker role. It's not going to change, disjointed and ineffective forward play has blighted our season.

6) There are many Adkins detractors out there, and I am on the turn having been uber-confident at the start of the season simply because after a year in charge we have seen little to no improvement save for a goalscoring blip in January, but are we seriously thinking that we're going to improve when the manager is making players play a game that isn't suited to them which in turn leads to the same f*cking mistakes being made by the same f*cking players every f*cking game?

On to tonight, looking at it from an entirely Reading perspective, it was just another dismal example of disjointed, aimless and generally creativeless football. Playing the way we do, we simply cannot handle teams that press us high and deny us space in our own half, particularly with ponderous liabilities at centre back. Having said that, even under no pressure at times there were basic errors - see Gorkks playing a square ball centrally from the edge of the 18-yard box and playing it out for a corner. Couple that with little or no movement up front or in midfield and suddenly the pattern begins to emerge - it leads to the ball out to the full backs and the hoof up the line or the centre backs play the hoof up to a physically strong but appalling in the air with back to goal Pogrebnyak. Or Le Fondre. We're not actually set up to play that way and so when we do, which invariably happens. we end up looking disjointed and aimless. Tonight it was the second time this season we have been outplayed by one of the poorer teams in the division. I mean no disrespect to Barnsley, but even their most ardent and one-eyed of supporters will understand that after 37 games the table doesn't lie but we were prevented from playing by a well drilled team who had a reasonable amount of Championship ability within their ranks. It's fair to say that they were a tidy outfit, a bit lacking in creative quality but their second goal was an excellent example of passing football that Reading can only dream of playing this season. Their high pressing caused two horrible errors that gifted them the first, and then two quite superb efforts gave them the points that they deserved. The third was a supreme strike but at the same time, Jesus, just stand off him and let him shoot yeah lads? But despite the poor display we still managed to get into some excellent situations - McCleary's run forced Steele into a smothering save, Pogrebnyak through on goal and (questionably) brought down for the penalty, Drenthe getting to the byeline and then producing a horrendous cross, then the same man missed the most guilt-edged chance we had...and that was it then. Barnsley saw the game out disconcertingly comfortably against a team supposedly aspiring for the playoffs.

That is now two wins in ten at home with a goals for/against of F17 A14, but 12 of those goals came in two successive games. Discount those two games and you have F5 A12 over 8 games - that is poor by any standard. The fear is a petering out season ending in midtable (more likely than not on present form) and then a firesale in the summer because quite simply we cannot afford to keep the players we have. Until then, sit back and enjoy the ride. Unfortunately the ride is going to be more the Noddy car in Sainsbury's than Nemesis.

So you advocate dropping a winger who had just scored two goals for a striker who is hopelessly out of form?

LOL that was brilliant.

"Togetherness and good team spirit" says the conman in the dugout who couldn't even be bothered to show his tanned face for the last 20 minutes. At Birmingham I noticed only about half the players could be bothered to get excited enough to celebrate at full time. Tonight we saw a careless and passionless performance devoid of leadership. Adkins - if he wasn't a football manager and god knows I wish he wasn't - would make a very good Estate Agent.

I dearly hope he is not at the club next season, along with wasters like Drenthe and Guthrie who have bombed out at far bigger clubs, presumably for showing the same sh*t attitude they have shown from day one since they joined us. Bomb out the high earners and the dross like Akpan and Blackman, who are stealing a living playing football at this level.

If these youngsters are as good as people keep banging on about get them in the team next season.

Same old story when we play a team struggling at the bottom or for form. Absolutely awful with Obita and Pearce being the only two to come out of it with a modicum of credit.

McCarthy - Took far too long to give the ball to Gunter in the shambLOLes of a first goal. The first touch before he takes a long kick kept going behind him so he kept shanking it. Has let his performances drop badly and needs to refocus. It's time to give Feds a chance not only for us but for him and any hope he has of getting in the Aussie squad for the World Cup because McCarthy sure as hell ain't going with England. 2

Gunter - Tbf to him with the first goal he had no option but to pass it back because McCarthy had taken too long with the throw out. Not sure why Adkins chose to break up his partnership with McCleary and he suffered because of it. Mentally shot after the third goal. 2
Gorkss - Nightmare game for him. All over the place, and not in a good way, right from the start. 3
Pearce - Had a job covering for Gorkss. Didn't have the best game but he certainly wasn't the main problem in a poor defensive display. 4
Obita - Good first half and looked to get forward as much as possible with one exceptional run being a particular highlight. Faded in the second half. 5 MotM

Blackman - Does something good bringing the ball down and then something dismal. No understanding with Gunter. Did anyone even move when he went through on goal? You just knew he wasn't scoring. 1
Akpan - Some good some bad. Kept turning into trouble and some poor first touches. 3
McAnuff - Looked lost in Midfield but he should have been playing on the wing with Taylor in the middle 3
Drenthe - The RFC version of the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Set pieces, shots and crosses, particularly one in the first half that had people in stitches, all overhit. The chance he had which he shanked wide summed up his lack of Brain power, didn't set himself or look up, just tried to whack it as hard as he could. Did track back several times which gives him an extra point but so unfit he looked tired out after doing so. 3
McCleary - Anonymous for most of it, playing on the wrong side and when he did get crosses in they were dreadful. 2

Pog - Held it up well at times which was difficult seeing as the ball kept being hit at him around his throat. Good penalty. 3

ALF - No service. 2
HRK - Hardly noticed him. Described in the programme as having pace, power and precision and we saw none of those qualities. 2

Adkins - Wrong on so many levels. Too many square pegs in round holes, strange decision to break up the Gunter-McCleary partnership, did nothing significant to change the game until it was too late, has got praise for bringing in the youngsters but should have shown more faith in Jake Taylor and started him and there are a couple more that I'm too tired to remember. 1

Someone said Crosby was shaking his head at some of the defending. Well he has been Adkins defensive coach at his clubs and all of those sides have tended to have a rep for conceding goals at an alarming rate.

That really was dire
At least Adkins dispensed with the positive spin-doctoring, soundbites & clichés in his post match interview to admit the team were poor, but his selection, formation & tactics (whatever the hell they were supposed to be tonight!) were just as much to blame as the player's ineptitude. He will surely have to change things round for Saturday in some way after that dreadful display by those supposed professionals tonight.
And talking of supposed professionals, just how could Adie Williams think Ipswich beating Derby to get within 2pts of us was a "good result for Reading"?? Look at the league table before opening your mouth next time you pillock....

We were playing Barnsley.
As a Yank you might not be too clued up as to how shit Barnsley are.
Well they are very shit.
Did we "have the players" to beat Barnsley at home comfortably? Yes, of course we did and anyone who disagrees with that is a massive spazz, yank or not.
