Dave-Royal Gary Bowyer?

Could do worse and we could possibly do better!

His Blakburn teams were solid and well drilled without being spectacular, but I got the impression that tactically he is quite switched on.

Saw that Bowyer has put himself in for the Reading job and as a Rovers fan thought I'd give my two penneth on him...

Bowyer's strengths lie in coaching. He creates a good atmosphere within the team and the players are always onside with him, even when things aren't going well. He's also got a good eye for a player and brought in plenty of decent players for us - Cairney, Gestede, Conway and Marshall, for example. Once we hit the embargo the quality of signings went downhill, but it's hard to blame him for that.

His weaknesses are all management related. He can't adapt to a game as it develops, and rarely makes the right decision in-game in terms of tactics or substitutions. The players like him but not convinced they respect him. Ewood has been compared to a holiday camp, and Paul Lambert has spoken about how easy the players have it and how he's walked into a club with very low expectations and an acceptance of mediocrity. For Bowyer a draw is good enough, a win is a bonus. The style of football has been mind-numbingly boring and bland, with the team afraid to take risks or do anything creative. That's been the case during his entire tenure, not just the embargo period. It was so frustrating to watch us play for a draw when we needed three points, especially at home. This attitude transferred to the players who also believed draws were good enough. Lambert is now trying to change that mentality.

Also worth noting Bowyer isn't great in front of the cameras. He rarely says anything of note and regularly praises poor performances. He uses a lot of excuses (other clubs have more money to spend, embargo embargo embargo, referee cost us, weather cost us, bad luck, etc) which can grate after the hundredth draw/loss that should have been a win.

We were dug out of holes time and time again by Rhodes and Gestede. With Rhodes injured at the start of the season and Gestede sold, Bowyer had no clue how to change things and we didn't win a game until Rhodes came back. When Bowyer was sacked we'd only won three out of sixteen games.

You should be aiming for better than Bowyer. Good luck, you're a decent club and IMO should have no trouble getting in a good manager to take the team forward.

Bergkamp - yes please. Good ties to decent clubs too. We'd get some good up and coming players from good footballing sides.

Pearson - not sure right fit - very outspoken.
Coppell - until the end of the season maybe if he's up for it
McDermott - no way. People on here only remember the decent games - I also remember the many times we we complete dog. Unlikely to get best out of current squad.
Parky - legend as a player - done nothing as a manager except for a couple of cup runs and a promotion from league 2 via the play-offs - he's at his right level.

Agreed Bergkamp would be brilliant.

On the Pearson front though, given his reported shenanigans from Leicester, wondering how it would go down with the playing staff.... ...would make BBC Berks interviews a lot more amusing though.

Parky also got Colchester promoted to Division 2 and kept them there for a season while we were mucking about in Division 1 the first time

Thanks for the insight and good of you to show interest. I think most of us would be surprised and disappointed if Bowyer got the job.

From all accounts it appears that Pearson is an utter mentalist who wouldn't fit in with the Reading way, but the club has in recent years started to look like the antithesis of it's former self, so why not? Either way it's going to be eventful. I'm in this to be entertained, so Pearson over Bowyer any day of the week.

Peter Reid hasnt done anything in football management since he left Sunderlan in 2002. That said the clubs he's worked with subsequently were financial basket cases at the time; Leeds, Coventry, Plymouth. Guess the link comes out of the favt he had a year managing the Thai national team about 5 years ago. Last heard of managing Mumbai City in India.

So let me get this right

So some of you want Dennis Bergkamp because he was a great player and you've heard of him? Even though he has no managerial track record at all let alone in the Championship which is well known for being a bitch to get out of. But you've heard of him.

You don't want Pearson, a manager with a successful record in this league because the BBC made a mountain out of a mole hill last season.

We really do have a clueless bunch of fans.

I'd be very skeptical about an appointment like that a la hypia at Brighton.

Naturally said this to an arse fan and got hammered "blasphemous.. The man is God" etc etc

By all accounts he's a very good number 2 and has his aspirations to be a manager in his own right, but there's a big difference from being a good assistant and a good manager as our recently departed charlatan demonstrates.
