From Despair To Where? Says it all that his 3 1/2 years at Reading is the longest he's stayed in any managerial job and Millwall aside, he's not come anywhere near replicating that success in the subsequent 23 years.
His footballing philosophy was pretty sound so I've no idea where it's gone wrong. Maybe he's just a colossal prick.
I think we broke him.
He reacted badly to the stick we gave him at Wolves failing to take them up, at least in part, thanks to our desperation to get back at him that got us big wins against them. On top of that he basically shafted two clubs in a row in Reading and Leicester. That sort of self-serving disregard for anyone but himself, combined with a failure to keep Leicester up or get Wolves up, can't have exactly increased his management stock very much. I think his ego may have eaten his ability to manage effectively.
