MATCHWATCH : Bristol City (a) sponsored by hopeless causes

by Sutekh » 01 Oct 2019 21:53

When : Saturday 5th October, 3.00pm
Where : Ashton Gate, Ashton Road, Bristol, BS3 2EJ, Bristol
Capacity : 27,000
Away Stand : One end of the stadium in the Atyeo Stand
What might I see in the area : Wurzels

JG takes the miserably underperforming shambles of his “team” down to the West Country knowing that yet another shambolic disheartening pile of indeterminate ramblings from his players will leave his tenure in a very delicate place.

Excluding their trip to Brentford (Wednesday), City have lost only one game so far this season so just the sort of we’ll balanced in form and cohesive side you want to visit given the current predicament. They have drawn both of their previous two home games though so maybe better to play them away than at home currently.

The City team are likely to be without Korey Smith, Benik Afobe, Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva while Reading have a slight doubt over Blackett and John Swift serving a one match ban following his sending off v Fulham

Referee

Steve Martin is back again.

Previously

13 April 19 > Reading 2-1 Brentford
13 Feb 19 > Reading 2-1 Blackburn Rovers
22 Dec 2018 > Reading 0-1 Middlesbrough
14 Apr 2018 > Reading 2-2 Sunderland
27 Feb 2018 > Nottm Forest 1-1 Reading
11 Dec 2017 > Reading 2-2 Cardiff City
23 Sep 2017 > Reading 1-1 Hull City
26 Aug 2017 > Birmingham City 0-2 Reading
24 Jan 2017 > Reading 1-0 Fulham
15 Oct 2016 > Queen's Park Rangers 1-1 Reading
15 Mar 2016 > Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Reading
23 Jan 2016 > Reading 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday
19 Sep 2015 > Bristol City 0-2 Reading
25 Mar 2014 > Reading 1-3 Barnsley

Historically

Many a season has been shared with the red half of Bristol with this being the 47th league visit to face City.

Reading have amassed 14 wins from the previous 46 games compared to City’s 24. City do have an unfortunate habit of scoring though as they average around 2 goals a game in this fixture.

The last 10 games at Ashton Gate are very even with 4 wins apiece though so it’s not unknown for Reading to sneak something but it is very rare for Reading not to be on the receiving end of a battering no matter what the final score.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Have no-one else though. It's what you get when you have zero wingers

Was basically what I was suggesting last week. Wouldn’t disagree with the formation

How about, what worked last year.

........................Cabral
....Howe, Miazga, Morrison, Obita
..............Rinomhota, Pele
Meite..............Ejaria..................Barrett
.......................Puscas

Full backs who can cross and don't spend all game in the opposition half. A midfield with some presence. A bit of width.

Nope. Putting my foot down here. The answer to formation problems is not "let's try another formation".

We dknt even have the players for it. We have no wingers. Ffs get a grip.

Are we shite right now? Yes. Absolutely. But how would moving to a 4-4-2 when we havent used that formation once help us in any way?

Happy with that. Would be delighted if Yiadom wasnt unfairly dropped.

It's not like we changed formation for the first time against top of the league away last season and got a very valuable point is it...

You are correct - lashing out due to that utterly inept display.

Tbh we could play any bloody formation you can think of and we’ll still get smashed if we turn up like that again on Saturday

No specific formation will fix this. It’s a complete lack of defensive discipline, concentration and ability to create chances. It’s a complete mess

He can't defend, doesn't cross and is never in position.

It's a lack of common sense. I've always thought do not pass the ball unless there's a purpose. Each pass should put the receiver in a better position than the passer. Simple concept, right? Then how do you explain three yard passes to the side? Or passes to someone being heavily marked. How is that going to help you progress up the pitch? Ejaria is oxf*rd useless. What's he good for?

I'm so angry with Gomes right now. He's not the only problem, don't get me wrong. But he's spunked a hell of a lot of money and it isn't coming to fruition. Some transfers don't work which is OK. But he's kicked out adequate players for this. I'd wager a lot of money McNulty, Gunter, Mannone etc are laughing on the inside

And yet some people are saying he’s the best RB in the league?

Agree with Rinomhota and Pele in midfield. We need to protect the defence and stop being a walk over.

Ejaria needs to play further up.

Sorry, they were separate points. He has kicked out/isolated some players like Gunter and Baldock who are no worse than what’s shown out there. And his treatment of players like Meyler, McNulty, Mannone etc, well they’ve got the last laugh

Rafael is one of the only few who should claim their wages this week without feeling like a fraudster. Goalie isn’t the issue

Yiadom Moore Morro Miazga Richards
Ejaria Pele Rinomhota
Puscas Joao

No point playing square pegs in round holes - We have no wingers. EJaria switching with Olise or Barrett if he doesn’t cover enough ground.

Feels like it’s squeaky bum time for Gomes; and we’ve only just made October
