MATCHWATCH : Swansea City (a)

by Sutekh » 23 Nov 2021 22:12

When : Saturday 27th November 2021, 3pm
Where : Swansea.com Stadium, Morfa, Swansea, SA1 2FA
Capacity : 21,088

Reading take their shambolic form into Wales next for an awkward trip to play a team that they haven’t beaten in any of the last 16 attempts (the last win was in September 2008).

Barring Swansea’s fixture at Barnsley on Wednesday, the the current form of the Swans is no wins in the last two played, before that their run was 4 wins from 6 so I’d say they’re useful and Reading’s management need to make sure they do their homework properly to maximise the chance of some return (so that’s that then).

Joel Piroe and Jamie Paterson are the ones to nail, shackle, immobilise and generally deny any sort of service to as they’ve scored 16 goals between them which accounts for over three quarters of Swansea’s league goals so far. Ben Hamer now appears to have settled in as the no. 1 for the Welshman and so provides the Reading link - at least that means he’s the most unlikely Swansea player to score.

The Welsh are injury free you’ll be pleased to here while Reading are positively on their way to the same position with only 8 players left to go (Rino, Araruna, Joao, Meite, McIntyre, Hoilett, Morrison and Clarke).

Referee

Tony Harrington

Previously

23 Oct 21 > Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Reading
10 Feb 21 > Reading 1-3 Brentford
12 Dec 20 > Queens Park Rangers 0-1 Reading
02 Nov 19 > Reading 2-1 Millwall
24 Aug 19 > Huddersfield Town 0-2 Reading
30 Mar 19 > Reading 2-1 Preston North End
23-Oct 18 > Birmingham City 2-1 Reading
24-Feb-18 > Reading 3-3 Derby County
16-Sep-18 > Brentford 1-1 Reading
21-Feb-17 > Huddersfield Town 1-0 Reading
10-Dec-16 > Reading 2-1 Sheffield Wednesday
06-Feb-16 > Reading 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
29-Sep-15 > Burnley 1-2 Reading
01-Oct-14 > Reading 0-0 Leeds United

Historically

This will be the 36th league visit to Swansea who have been consistent opponents stretching all the way back to 1920. In that time there have been 9 wins for Reading and 17 wins for the Swans. There have been only 3 goalless draws in that run but Reading have had a tendency to “come a cropper real good” on several visits, esp. in the 1960s when the club conceded 5 goals on three consecutive visits. That said, though, the biggest win was Reading’s 6-1 hammering of Swansea back in 1989, of all seasons.

However Reading are still looking for their first league win at the Liberty Stadium being on a run of LDLDLDD at the moment, so looks like another reason to be afraid of this one.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription (audio only)
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

There's not a player fit, except maybe Holmes, who deserves to start the next game.

TDB deserves a chance surely. Haven't seen him play in ages.

16 games? what on earth could possibly go wrong? really that's beyond appalling.

Southwood.

As for the game, this is going to be miserable. It's going to be wet, cold, shit and we will lose.

Assuming there will be a whoosh, if I make any comment here.

Well the Sheffield utd jinx continued last night and I fully expect this long drawn out one to stretch to an astonishing 17 games.

So we follow up a home game against a team we never beat with an away game against a team we never beat.

Happy times.

There's increasingly many of those to come across. It's like we're playing Arsenal and Utd every week.

I think we need to give Ejaria a rest for this one, saw him in person against Forest and he was terrible but somehow he managed to be even worse last night.

I would start Carroll, give him 45 minutes and hopefully cause problems early in the game.

Southwood

Yiadom
Holmes
Dann
Baba

Laurent
Drinkwater
Swift

Halilovic
Carroll
Azeez

Four points from our last seven games. Another defeat and Hull then has to become must win for Pauno. No excuses now. He has plenty of bench options.

yep he needs to improve significantly from last night. Put a lot of that defeat down to the manager. There are options there now

Think I'd swap in Puscas for DD or Laurent but otherwise that looks about right to me. Both AH and Azeez are lefties aren't they? ideally would have Hoilett come in for one of those two to give some proper width

One mistake and he deserves to be dropped? Overall he’s been fantastic since he’s come in. Think that’s harsh tbh.

It wasn't a goalkeeping error, not even slightly.

Thought Southwood had a dodgy game - wasn't great with those crosses at the start, poor distribution and I don't think the effort on the goal was particularly good. seemed to make himself smaller rather than bigger

But overall he has been brilliant since he has come in. Would say that's the first average game he has had

Agreed. When those shots are so close, they’re so difficult to stop as you physically don’t have time to react. Yes you could be covering the near post more, but you’d leave the far side wide open which would be a far more conventional - shooting back across goal.

He had an iffy moment early on with a corner but I mean, if that’s his contribution to our mediocrity then he’s doing pretty well imho.
