Your worst 11 since supporting RFC?

by Loafer » 27 Feb 2022 18:49

Who would it be?

For me, GK is most definitely Virginia. John Halls is in, probably Vydra and Rasiak upfront. Can't think of anymore off the top of my head but I'm sure more will come.

I’d have Simon Sheppard in goal and Paul Brayson upfront.

Bodin at left back is a given. Made Gurney look world class.

I remember on the Southbank we used chant "you got tackled by Bodin, lalalalala" whenever he made a successful tackle. Pity we only got to sing it once.

And who can forget when the ref sent off Bodin instead of the actual Reading culprit and all Reading fans, players and management stayed silent. :D

Any lineup without Malcolm Swain is just lazy … and wrong

.........................Virginia
Ashcroft*, Kromheer, Khumalo, Bodin
Brooker, Reilly, Meyer, Crawford
...................Brayson, Baseya

Not sure if I've got Reilly or Crawford's position right. It's been a long time. Ashcroft is very hard done by. Can't think of many RBs who haven't been decent and he's purely there having been brought into a shite side at least a year or two before his potential time.

Peter van der Kwaak very lucky to have avoided selection.

Completely forgot Rasiak had played for us. Was he really that awful (9 in 30 league games)?

The starting 11 that recently lost 2-0 at home to Luton.

No, he was fine. Bodvarsson was worse.

I think it is telling that of the older members here, most are picking their teams from the 90s and early 00s. Broadly speaking we've been relatively blessed in the last 15 years with a good bunch of players, however ropey results have been.

In defence of Bodin he was already past his best when he joined us and was a solid left-back for Swindon during their Premier League/Championship seasons.

Oh I agree he will have been alright at some point, but for whatever reason he was awful for us.

If we're talking about actual first team players, rather than league cup fill-ins or randoms who were quickly found out.

GK - Rafael

CB - Illori
CB - Anton Ferdinand
CB - Khizanishvili

LWB - Joseph Mills
DM - Akpan
CM - Popa
CM - Drenthe
RM -Cummings (I did like him, but he was crap defensively)

CF - McNulty
CF - Manset

GK - Rafael

CB - Illori
CB - Anton Ferdinand
CB - Khizanishvili someone who was part of a team which got to a play-off final is in your worst ever XI? Ok.

LWB - Joseph Mills
DM - Akpan
CM - Popa in what universe is Popa a CM?
CM - Drenthe in what universe is Drenthe a CM?
RM -Cummings (I did like him, but he was crap defensively)

CF - McNulty I thought you weren't including people who quickly got found out?
CF - Manset

This but Meyler in for Fae and Bodin in for Williams.

Ashcroft probably deserves to be in ahead of Halford but that seems unfair given the circumstances. Similarly Bristow is a real contender at left back.

Left back really has been a shocking issue at times - Bodin, Williams, Travener, Bristow… I quite liked Joe Mills the one time I saw him but he bombed out. But then only Bodin was first choice for more than a few matches, so I suppose we’ve done OK since Robinson.

Not sure this team does what it set out to do.

Manset started how many games for us? And Mills? McNulty? Popa?

Anton Ferdinand was one of the best defenders I can remember us having. His injury record is the only mark against him.

Rafael literally won player of the season.

If I were to try to build a team your way, it would be something like…

Sheppard

Struggling for a RB
Cooper
Kromheer
Bodin

Brooker
Akpan
Evers
Aluko

Church
Brayson

I could be here all day lol.

Sheppard and Colgan for keeper.

Sheppard was a disaster and the Southbank would celebrate if he just caught a ball. Colgan was possibly even worse - Oxford away in the First Division relegation season being the pinnacle of his utter crapness, even pretending to be injured because he couldn't even kick a ball...

Special mentions to Keith Scott and Paul Brayson up front, and definitely Paul Bodin at left back. Dark days! You kids have been spoilt.

PATRIQT Keith Scott

He gets a pass for *that* goal against Bradford otherwise yes.

Agree with Brayson and the keepers though.
