Too many new players being thrown in together maybe.

Last year they all seemed to be operating telepathically at times - just not quite working yet.

Wirtz is too good a player not to come good in the way one would expect, but maybe he should have been integrated into the starting 11 a little more gradually.

I was amazed to hear before Arsenal beat Newcastle at the weekend that they were into favourites for the PL. Maybe it's making a bit more sense now, although personally I am very sceptical that Arteta has it in him to win the thing.

South Coast Royal So, as of now top of the Premier League.
Through to the next round of the Carabao Cup
A win in the Champs League against the team that thrashed Real Madrid 5-2 last weekend.
The two defeats have only been by the odd goal.

Hardly cause for great concern to Liverpool fans and so many clubs would love to be in their position.
In Arne we trust.

I've not seen all the performances, but the ones I have, you have been terrible at the back. Konate needs some time on the bench.

To me (as an outsider), it seems Slot wants to stamp more of his personality/authority/whatevs onto the team rather than sticking with what was working. Is Szbozlai (sp?) playing right back to try and replicate what Trent offered in terms of delivery? Other than that, I'm not sure why he doesn't trust the two RBs he has. Should he not be back in the really good (vomit) MF that did so well last season?

Difficult to judge which way it's going. Are you gonna click and start absolutely battering teams, or is the luck* gonna run out? I'm well aware that LFC players have the mentality to make their own luck. I could make a case that UTD should be doing better which they may have done if they had a similar mentality/whatevs

- deserved at least a point against Arsenal,
- should have beaten Fulham, could have been 3 up before they scored
- been more comfortable against Burnley
- Brentford; Bruno scores a pen, and they get the player sent of,f then maybe a win
- City, deserved beating
- Grimsby :?

Silver Fox 1st league title for 30 (?) years

No doubt you'll be pretty pleased with whoever is the first to win one at OT one day, if you live to see it

How did LFC manage the transitions back in the day, SCR? I'm vaguely aware of the 'boot room' culture, but not too sure what it actually is

I just saw this, which highlights that your performances haven't been great. It will be intriguing to see how it turns out.

Basically promoting from within and people with long associations with the club who understand and were instrumental in establishing the culture. In other words, continuity.

Liverpool Managers 1959 to 1998

Bill Shankly 59-74

Bob Paisley 74-83 played for the club 1939-1954 and was Shankly's assistant manager

Joe Fagan 83-85 - Scouser. Coach under Shankly and was Paisley's assistant manager, Quit after Heysel.

Dalglish 85-91 played for Paisley and Fagan

Ronnie Moran - 2 caretaker spells - Scouser. played for Shankly, coached under Shankly, Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish

Graeme Souness - 91_94 played for Paisley and Fagan

Roy Evans 94-98 - Scouser. Played for Shankly, coached under Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish, Moran and Souness.

It helps that up to and including Dalglish, they were all decent managers. Only Souness was an external appointment but obviously he played for the club for 6 years and won 12 major trophies in the process.

Thanks for saving me from having to check all the dates.
Four things I feel that have contributed to this slightly erratic start.

Firstly McAllister has been absolutely key to the set up but was injured pre-season and hasn't played in all of the games.
The trio of Gravenberch, Macca and Dom worked so well last season with each covering the other when forward moves progressed through whichever midfielder pushed ahead.
Wirtz coming in has altered the way the team plays and sangers pointed out that his contribution has been significant in creating chances but at the same time the team has lost a bit defensively.

The second thing is the departure of Diaz who showed great pace and did his share of defending whereas Gakpo for all his other ability doesn't cover so well

The third thing follows on from that in that the Robbo/Diaz combo has gone which had built up over time and Kerkez is finding it difficult to get the same type of connection with Gakpo.
Also defensively the new pairing of full-backs hasn't worked so well yet in combination with the central defenders, e.g. when to play offside.

The last thing is the Jota effect.
Not only has the team lost a valuable member but also his death was a major shock.
Anyone on here who has lost somebody close will know that it can take some time to get over it and I do feel that it has been a factor in this early part of the season.

Slot's problems (if indeed they really are problems) are how best to use the 4 full backs and how to do the same with Salah, Gakpo, Isak, Wirtz and Ekitike when all are fit.

I come back to the point about Macca who is such a clever all-round footballer that if and when he gets back to last season's (and the previous season's) performance levels you will see a better organised football team and who knows they might even win the title again.

It was updating the "in Rafa we trust" so "they" wouldn't have been right.

Do you know how much influence Slot has on recruitment? Wirst and Isak come across a little like Galactico-type signings.

Firstly he didn't want Nunez and secondly couldn't do anything much about Diaz who wanted to leave.
Also losing Jota meant a need for another striker so Ekitike was bought.

All three are very mobile forward players and fairly young so it wasn't like signing say Lewandoski or Casameiro where their better days are surely in the past even if they have been very successful and of course younger players can improve.

Early days but the Liverpool striker signings are probably better than other striker signings in the higher price brackets like Gyokeres or Sesko.

Liverpool tend not to make knee jerk signings with Richard Hughes now doing what he did at Bournemouth and I guess that he and Slot will have looked long and hard at prospective signings before going in heavily.

To be honest, I think the days of the boot room are gone. Managers don't get the time, ex players tend to go into media rather than coaching and when managers do leave clubs, they tend to take their coaching teams with them. You need to create a proper dynasty. Fergie may have been able to do it at United but the likes of McLaren and Kidd just weren't on the same level of Paisley.

I think you are right and that the Liverpool boot room was a bit special and different.
I can't think of any other top level club that implemented that type of succession programme so well.

Only West Ham I can think of, and not to the same scale. When Lou Macari became manager in 1989 he was only their sixth permanent boss, and the five before him had all either played or coached at the club before taking the reins.

I also think you'd need someone content to sit as an assistant for 5+ years without taking a manager's role somewhere else. Fergie certainly didn't have it with any of his assistants. Don't think Wenger's did either. They the only managers I can think of in the past 30 years who've created anything like a dynasty at one club.

West Ham - 5 managers in 87 years. Mental really

30 years
18 years
11 years
13 years
15 years
