Sonko gets Senegal call

Sonko is with English side Reading
Reading defender Ibrahim Sonko is one of the four uncapped players called to the Senegal squad for a 16 August friendly against the Ivory Coast.
The other three are Russia-based defender Pascal Mendy, striker Ibrahima Sidibe and French-born teenager Mame Ndiaye.

Ndiaye played one game for French club Olympique Marseille last season.

Senegal coach Henri Kasperczak also gave a surprise recall to goalkeeper Khadim Faye, who has not played for the national side in over a decade.

Faye, who plays for Portuguese side Boavista, won his last cap for his country in a World Cup qualifier against Togo in June 1996.

The match serves as preparation for both countries, who begin the qualifiers for the 2008 African Nations Cup finals in September.

Will he be back for Boro?

You beat me to it, M_S, I was going to post this. 16th August is a funny time to be having an international, isn't it?

I'm hoping he will go and prove himself as an international. He can't keep turning them down.

It looks like hes holding out for a French call up. If he has a good season in the Prem, which im sure he will, that might not be an unrealistic goal.

I'm not doubting you for a minute, just hadn't heard this before, where does the fRance connection come from specifically?

Er, has he turned this call up down?

He turned down the previous call up to the African Nations because of our situation (i.e. no adequate defensive cover, the need to keep the momentum going). Nothing to do with hoping for a French call up.

It should not be, especially when that country has an international football team.

I presume until he moved to England to play for Brentford in 2002.

I'm sure towards the back end of last season there was an article about him being keen on playing for the French national team.

If Boumsong can get a French call up then Sonks is a shoe in.

Born in Bignola, Senegal, lived in France sice he was about 4 IIRC.
