I'm not trying to make the goal clearer. I'm just posting the reaction at the time. FWIW my recollection is that Robin was about 5 yards outside the penalty area on the Southbank side.

Take off those rtgs mate. He was barred from most pubs in Reading for a damned good reason. Hence the family dislike as he was barred from at least one of our pubs. He was an arrogant, nasty piece of work.

I think you need to get a life mate! It appears that you have an attitude problem! Robin was far from arrogant, far from being a nasty piece of work, wasn't barred from most pubs (in fact only the Boars for being a bit 'over happy' so to speak), and most certainly not a p*ssed-up, rude scummer, in fact, thats similar to what we call people who make judgement on those that they have never met, and come over as twats when they admit that their judgement is based on what they were told. And yes, i did meet the 'Great Man'.

I think the problem with 'that goal' is that it happened so very quickly and very unexpectedly that few people probably consciously managed to take the full details in - a bit like 'witnesses' to an accident. You therefore are likely to get a lot of slightly varying accounts as to what actually happened.

Maybe a regression session under hypotherapy might produce a more reliable account!

On a perhaps slightly morbid note, I'm interested to know what the reaction was when Friday passed away (I was only 8 years of age at the time and had not even seen my first Reading match!). Was a big deal made of it by the club or local media? Any newspaper clippings?

Very low key from what I can remember. I believe there is a plaque for him at Breakspear (Ruislip) Crematorium - drive past the Crematorium nearly every day but have never got around to trying to find the plaque.

I think there was a double page spread in the Post - but the legend bit didn't really start to take off until a couple of years later.

No-one was interested in anything much to do with RFC in 1990 - bad times.

I recall it being a big thing amongst supporters at the time, and recall the conversations highlighting hugely varied emotions about him, ranging from fondness to sadness to contempt. (All 3 from the same people in some cases.)

I thought I'd get the Chelsea and Man Utd tickets just before I got the supporters bus up to Newcastle. But I was queuing for ages before I gave up and had plan B initiated! My 'Dad' was fortunate enough to be sat on hold for a couple of hours...

So I got chatting with the girl in the queue talking about this and that, mostly useless RFC having only two ticket desks open for the busiest away day morning ever (I kid you not, 2 desks out of a possible !

So I asked her how she started supporting Reading for as the queue was nearing the ticket office. "Oh, my dad used to play for them..." she said...

Yes, I was quit godsmacked when she told me it was 'him'! She was married now and didn't like her maiden name... ;o)

I wish I'd not had to leave the queue 'early' to get that bus though...
