Just a thought that occured to me this morning regarding our away form and who we have/will have played away from home by Xmas.

Based on the current league table - our away fixtures up until 21st December will have been against the following (league position in brackets):

Wycombe (1)
Birmingham (2)
Wrexham (3)
Barnsley (4)
Lincoln (5)
Stockport (6)
Bolton (10)
Exeter (11)
Peterborough (12)
Stevenage (14)
Rotherham (15)

So we will have only played 2 sides in the bottom half of the table and none at all below 15th away from home - so whilst it is no guarantee of improved results we will have "easier" games to come on the road - conversely our home games will be tougher in the 2nd half of the season and perhaps shows why we have continued to find results harder to come by on the road.

Also, unless Shrewsbury is rearranged before Xmas, we will have played 20 games after Lincoln (a) on the 21st - 11 away. Meaning post Xmas we will have 14 home and 12 away games to play.

So as said, home games get "tougher" after Xmas but away games get "easier" and goes a long way as to why our home form is so good and the away poor. You would anticipate our home form dropping off a bit and the away picking up - but if we can keep the home form going against better sides and pick up the away form against weaker sides then a run at the play-offs becomes a strong possibility.

We've not played enough times away against who we also played last season to judge too much yet, We drew against both Peterborough and Barnsley away last season (both 2-2); we also beat Wycombe away last season. We could well be behind our relative away points tally after the Wycombe one.

Then again, we did particularly badly in the first three/four months of last season and we've only played Exeter away of those teams so far - Cambridge; Blackpool; Northampton; Leyton Orient; Charlton and Shrewsbury are all in the second half of the season. Right now, I'd expect to pick up a decent amount of points from those six.

We did fine away from home after the Shrewsbury defeat. P15; W4; D6; L5 - and three of those losses were against the eventual top three. That works out as 28 points away from home over the course of a season, which would've put us twelfth in the away table last season. I certainly believe we'll get around 28 points away from home this season.

For completeness, when looking at the sides who got promoted from League One last season with the ones who got relegated from the Championship (matched by relative position):
