Well, we've all blurted out stuff in the heat of the moment that's instantly regrettable whilst watching the football but if I said that in my workplace whilst representing my employee, I'd expect some form of disciplinary action.

Exactly this. Saying it as a fan is bad enough but in a professional setting representing the club? I'd be disappointed if it wasn't taken more seriously by the club.
