Surely it's the heavy-handed attitude that is going to put people's backs up in the first place and create a crowd bruising for a fight?

My hubby took my daughter home early from the Cardiff game and was surprised to see the gates shut on the hill we normally walk down. He didn't know which way to go, but when he asked the stewards there what to do they just told him to go away in no uncertain terms. A different incident I know, but this made him feel quite angry at being treated like a trouble-maker when he was nothing of the sort.

I think the wording is that they need "reasonable suspicion" that there will be "alcohol related trouble."

That is a horribly-drawn law, completely open to interpretation. Interestingly, the Home Office guidance on this is more specific and includes safeguards - it's this document that is being utterly ignored by certain Police Forces!

You are correct, it is badly written legislation with no real definition it seems. Even the Crown Prosecution Service don't recognise it.

In the last few years our politicians appear to be making a habit of waving through badly written legislation. This is just one of many.

I think the police should be concentrating more on the more important things in this country like knife crime and gang culture instead of worrying about football which violence doesn't occur that much anymore

What are the odds of a similar misuse of Section 27 somewhere between Reading and Paddington on Sat 31/01?

Unlikely - there are no reports of the Met using this, or BTP, and if people are drunk and acting like twats there are plenty of other pieces of legislation that can be used against them without a S27.

But South Yorkshire Police in Doncaster have used this, so be there's an outside chance the following Tuesday. I doubt it though, as news of this case is spreading across Police Forums etc so they seem to be waiing for the outcome of the Stoke/GMP case before applying it again to football supporters.
