Pre-season friendlies 2026-27

Bit of info for anyone going to Saturday’s Charlton game- as expected only the F 1 of the football buses is running.

How much can you read into games like last night? This a team who barely stayed up in L2 last season, and obviously would have been treating it as a friendly too.

I feel like pre season can only really give bad pointers but anything positive is caveated. Injuries picked up? Bad. Toil against a non-league team? Bad. Fail to even lay a glove on a Championship side? Bad. But beating Newport 4-0 can't be read into too much for reasons articulated.

But the absence of anything too bad is good.

I think it’s fair to be happy about the result and in general how we’ve looked in preseason

I do quite like the make up of that starting 11. Need a strong physical fit striker in there as well really, prob instead of Osho for now, but otherwise I’d be more than happy to see that team start against Luton.

Bench has reasonable options and be nice to see some of Osho, Beacroft, Sackey, Duah involved

I went yesterday evening.

Overall we looked OK I thought, some sloppiness in midfield and a few moves didn't quite get going but that's what pre-season is for I suppose. The move for the second goal was really good and the youngsters all gave a good account of themselves.

Newport were very bad and overly physical. Godwin-Malife was targeted for some reason and had to come off injured, then when Ahmed replaced him at HT about two minutes in one of the big lumps up front lunged in two-footed on him. It was crazy and there was a lot of holding and blocking off-the-ball, which we got dragged into a few times. It felt less like a friendly at times and more like a cup game against lower league opposition.

Lisbie looked exciting, just the sort of pacy, direct running we could do with on the wings.

I think we started the physical stuff, our left back ploughed through his man a couple of times early on. It did seem a bit out of place for a warm up game,

For me I thought the physicality started early on when their winger left one on Godwin-Malife and went from there. We certainly gave a bit back though which I don't mind to be honest, even though we should have risen above it.

I'd be staggered if Newport stayed in the league this year.

We didn’t have a left back. We had a Dorsett. Even if you squint really hard and put a number three on his back, he is never a left back. With Roberts joining the ranks of ‘liking a knock’, it is still a problem area for a team who should be pushing for promotion. In modern football, the fullbacks are key as they are normally the only natural attacking width you have.
