In all seriousness (from what I overheard from the dugout), Thatcham have had only two training sessions before today and were trailing players out in different positions (which will factor in to the lack of positional awareness and cohesion throughout the game).

Wouldn’t be surprised to find out a lot of the girls hadn’t met before those training sessions tbh.

I think we’ve played eight friendlies before today, so there was a massive fitness gulf on top of the usual ability gap you’d expect when playing a side from a lower division.

Not sure either side would’ve benefitted much from today’s game unfortunately.

Certainly wouldn’t’ve done much for the Thatcham players’ confidence going forward, although their manager was always trying to put a positive spin on everything (which was good to see).

Thanks. That helped me find that they're specifically in Division Two South of the Thames Valley league, which is level eight (so three levels below Reading).

Doing a bit of research: they're officially Thatcham Town Kingfishers, with there being two Thatcham & Newbury Ladies teams – Blues are in the same division this season; Whites are a division below. With there being Newbury Women too, it does seem the talent will be spread very thinly in the area.

They seem to officially be a new team, with an article by the Newbury Weekly News stating:

The Kingfishers launch inaugural campaign with a showdown against Reading FC Women in a massive boost for local women’s sport.

Thatcham Town FC is preparing to write a new chapter in West Berkshire sporting history as the club officially launches its newly formed women’s side – The Kingfishers – with an exciting friendly against Reading FC Women.

The clash at Waterside Park on Sunday, August 23 marks the dawn of a partnership between the two clubs, bringing high-calibre women’s football right to Thatcham’s front door.

Kick-off is set for 2:00 PM, with gates opening at 12:30 PM for what promises to be a landmark afternoon both on and off the pitch.

With momentum behind the women's game growing rapidly, the match represents far more than a standard pre-season fixture.

As part of their inaugural season, the club is using the event to launch The Kingfishers, cement their link with Reading FC, and generate crucial financial backing for the competitive campaign ahead.

Main kit sponsor Jones Robinson will be in attendance to back the new squad, while young mascots selected from local grassroots teams will walk out alongside the players, giving the town's rising young talent front-row seats to the action.

Off the pitch, organisers are pulling out all the stops to build a genuine family atmosphere and raise vital funds for the club.

Young fans can look forward to fun half-time activities on the pitch, while supporters of all ages will be catered for with food and drink available throughout the afternoon alongside an open clubhouse bar.

With adult admission set at just £5 and children admitted completely free, the club is calling on sports fans from across Thatcham, Newbury, and the surrounding district to turn out in force, pack the terraces at Waterside Park, and give The Kingfishers a booming launch into competitive football.

Also, I imagine with Reading being back under the men's company (don't know if that's the correct terminology) there will be a bit of a push to return the women's team to the higher levels. The signings seem to have mostly come from sides in level four. All of this helps explain today's outcome.

I am too. I’m quite tempted by the £75 season ticket now they’re back at the Mad Stad (Slough was always the wrong side of Reading for me). Does anyone know how many games it covers?

If Thatcham is the backup home venue, that would be a bonus for me as I can simply walk there.

The Southern Region Women’s football league website(FA) is pretty good - we are in the Premier League. Sadly the matches are only announced in batches, so at the moment we only know fixtures up to the end of September. The Reading Women’s team also have their own dedicated website which i find ok.
