Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire earlier on Monday, James Sunderland - MP for Bracknell - said he would have joined Reading fans on the pitch had he been at Saturday's abandoned match.

Royals supporter Sunderland was not able to be in his usual seat at the Select Car Leasing Stadium for the game.

"Going on the pitch and protesting in that way is not what I should be condoning as an MP," he said.

"But I sympathise with the fans. If I'd been there I would have done it as well."

An estimated 1,000 Royals fans poured on to the pitch after 16 minutes, signifying the number of points the club have had deducted since Dai took over in 2017.

Following relegation from the Championship after being docked six points last season they are 21st in League One, three points from safety, having been stripped of four points this campaign.

Sunderland said he would be meeting sports minister Stuart Andrew this week to ask for the forthcoming Football Governance Bill to be sped up, and for Reading to be the "test case".

"I'm a fan and seeing fans on the pitch, seeing the match abandoned, seeing the emotion and heartbreak is tragic. We've got to the point now where something really serious has to be done," he added.

"We have got to put pressure on the EFL. They are part of the solution, not part of the problem now, in my view.

"Points deductions must not happen - this is about the fans and the club and making sure we wrestle control from Dai Yongge, however we do it. The club is broken under him.

"We have got to do whatever it takes to make sure Dai Yongge does not run any clubs in British football ever again."

I fear it won't happen to us. The key with Brighton is that the owner sold, while our owner is lying to us when he says he will. Bury's owner rejected several offers before it ended; he lost out big time and tried to sue the EFL for their expulsion, to no avail.

It's great what Brighton have done and they do offer hope, but only if we can get rid of this guy for which, let's be honest, we're out of ideas.

Maybe there's something to be said for it. The unpalatable fact is that to survive we need his goodwill and co-operation. It's as simple as that.

I do think it's important that attempted abandonments don't become the 'new tennis balls' default protest, tried at every game now.

There's been huge media attention, and it's clear from the EFL statement that they intend to do everything they can to force him out. Further abandonments wouldn't achieve that anything extra, and the media goodwill could turn negative pretty quickly.

Beyond that though, it could result in many games being forced to be played behind closed doors. Some might say "so what?" but one of the factors that caused Dai to fold KSV was the lack of income de to covid restrictions in early 2020. Pressuring Dai into doing something is a good thing, but there's a real risk of pushing him into doing the very thing we are trying to stop him doing.

Saw a Facebook post somewhere that suggested a boycott of a future home game, but protesting to continue outside. How about a partial boycott and entering the stadium starting in the 16th minute?

The message isn't going to get out to everyone and as such will limit it's impact.

Would the lack of income be a lot? The Season Tickets seats are already paid for, aren't they? He would also save on stewards costs. lighting not on in the stands after the match, etc.

Maybe not significant, but still something. I can't imagine matchday revenue is an area of the club where we lose out (although I wouldn't be terribly surprised) so it would still be something that we'd miss out on. Given our current situation, everything matters at the moment just to get us through day-to-day operations by the sounds of it.

I also agree that multiple pitch invasions are not the way to go, appreciate some fans' efforts to try and hit Dai directly away from the club, like going through Pang, the casino he regularly visits etc. What impact it has, who knows but at least it shows a commitment to wanting to get rid.

I think we can say that getting the match abandoned on Saturday was a great success, as we have had huge press coverage this week and I am sure the EFL will do all they can to pressurise Dai to get out.

But that should be it. I don't see any purpose in getting further games abandoned, as that will just damage the cause now. I think we have to let matters take their course. As Dai won't call in the administrators, it seems to me the only two outcomes now are that he sells, or we likely don't finish the season and are liquidated.
