I find the rewriting of Phil Parkinson's career with us somewhat bewildering

How's it being re-written?

Parkinson's never been rated for being an incredible talent, but for being a longserving blood and thunder, 100% committed player who played in one of our most successful sides, and as that side broke up and declined gave the remnants some backbone and fighting spirit, always lifting the crowd.

Very accurate summary. Managers picked him for that backbone, at a time where there were real literal physical battles in the middle of the pitch. I may be wrong, but wasn’t his the last testimonial played at Reading? Which is the strata below statue. One abiding memory of last season was Parky making a very obvious point of applauding the Reading fans after losing, and meaning it.

Didn't Gilksey get one? Prior to him and the above reckon it was Steve Death in 1979.

Interesting to me that Branfoot doesn't get a mention anywhere that I can see. Promotion to the 2nd tier of English football, an all-time record start to a domestic football season and a thumping Wembley victory to boot.

I mean I wouldn't include him myself but clearly the agricultural football style and the the fact he replaced Evans seems to count against him when his achievements surpass many that are mentioned above.

I think you are right in the last para, Evans was also very harshly sacked when we were in the top 4 which also went against Ian.

If you look at it in terms of achievement he is only behind Sir Steve & Brian as best all time Reading manager.
