Due to the voting system, Ballon d'Or is merely a popularity contest - hence why Messi and Ronaldo were trading wins for over a decade (even when neither had particularly good seasons) - and is heavily affected by the player's trophy wins (either at club or international level). In 2021, Jorginho came third despite not being amazing simply because Chelsea won the Champions League and Italy won the Euros.
