Ferris Villa make £18m bid for Darren Bent, potentially rising to £24m :|

Why would he want to leave a team fighting for Europe, to join a team fighting to stay in the league?

can we please move away from quoting transfer fee's at the initial payment amount?

They have for years and years been quoted at the full amount and all of a suddenly everone want to quote it at the initial amount. I can't help but feel Michael Carrick's transfer to Man Utd being the catalyst behind this. Everyone was stunned at the £18M price tag yet Utd fans were all desperate to 'correct' people and tell them that it was £14m up front and £4M in add ons. One can only assume why Utd released that bit of information.

Sunderland accept an £18m bid from Aston Villa for Darren Bent. The fee can rise to as much as £24m dependant on appearances and other factors.

Bent has scored 32 goals in 58 apperances since joining Sunderland 18 months ago for £10m.

Is he going to be wasted at Villa?
Feels like a sideways step to me, and that's if Villa stay up.

Is it? What should 32 goals in 58 appearances cost at this level?

if Villa recover from this season, then they'll soon be above Sunderland.

Its just that they seem 'too good to go down' to me.

No doubt Villa are a 'bigger club' in terms of potential, if they find their feet again. But it's a bit like joining Liverpool at the moment - difficult to really say when they will fulfil that potential again.

I guess Bent could be part of that jigsaw, Villa don't have a goalscorer. Carew doesn't count.

Bent could form a decent pairing with Heskey.

Imho. My opinion probably on the basis of the last couple of seasons under M O'N though, they were this seasons' Spurs, with Agbonlahor, Young etc, looked a good attacking side. They've been getting steadily shitter since then. But I rate Houiller, I think given time he could turn it around again, the signing of Bent a very decent start, he'll score 10-15 goals before the end of the season.

I'd say in terms of fans, infrastructure and history etc. Sunderland and Villa are two similarly sized clubs. Obvious Villa have had more recent success but there's no reason why that should continue. They both have wealthy backers and the table suits Sunderland at the moment. I'm assuming something has happened behind the scenes to bring this out of Bent, as I'd say he has it pretty good at Sunderland. Great piece of business for Villa though.
