I concur with Dirk on this; Coppell was 100% against playing in Europe and his attitude to the FA Cup was summed up in a Fans Forum where he said that the majority of the winners came from a small pool of 5 or 6 teams at the top end of the table (that has changed a bit in recent Years but still holds true) and so didn't ee the point in having a real go.

He was judged solely on League position, and knew Season 2 was going to be tough, which is why the lack of investment was so surprising that Summer.

Which coincided with SJM's printing business going down the plug hole and he saw an unexpected opportunity to claim back loans from the club. We didn't invest, we went down, and then for a few seasons we had those black holes which were again SJM calling in the loans.

Do we really need to clarify that there's a huge difference between having realistic expectations about the club's chance to win a competition and not trying to progress?

Only if we clarify that if we really wanted to enter a competition ( European football) then we'd have done everything in our power to qualify for that competition. We clearly didn't.

My point in reply to 72 Bus on the previous page was that it was nothing to do with Madejski's tight fistedness and everything to do with Coppell being spooked by the experience of George Burley's Ipswich.

There was talk a little while ago that we occupied a position in the table (21st) for the longest time for any team outside of the top place.
