Coppell to sign contract next

We're hardly in the same situation as Charlton where we were on a downward spiral before someone took over and took them from the bottom of the Championship to establishing themselves in the Premiership year in, year out. We were already promotion contenders when Coppell took over and we're in the same division now as we were then. To compare Coppell with someone who did for Charlton what Curbishley accomplished is hilarious.

Coppell took over a team that had never played at the top level, and a team that was argueably stale and needed rebuilding.

In my view both were the right fit for their respected clubs. I would argue the same with Bolton and Allardyce. I suspect when Coppell goes he will be a lot harder to replace than some may think. I hope to be proved wrong though.

I've been fairly quiet on the subject of Martinez as a future manager. But if he could get us playing like Swansea, given I think we have more quality than them. I would welcome him with open arms.

He has done a magnificent job at Swansea, and the way they play football is a joy to watch. Great passing side.

Considering Martinez was lined up as a potential replacement for Queiroz? at Man Utd, when he left to manage Portugal, I can imagine that there would be a long line of suitors for his services in the summer

We did used to play like Swansea are at the moment, imo.

We played better than Swansea are at the moment, but not especially like them, other than they CAN counter quickly with deadly wingers. We never used to have a patient passing build up (except under Burns where we didn't have any attacking prowess), we didn't play 4-5-1 (except under Pards with Fozzie, but very different system)

The only comparisons I see are that both clubs (have) play(ed) with two wide wingers and are exciting to watch and getting the best out of their system.

I guess you are basing that on the extremely limited evidence of what Martinez has actually done so far ?

The football world is littered with managers who have one or two good seasons and then spend years trying to do it again at other clubs with other players.
I like Martinez, he seems intelligent and wants to do things the right way but there is no guarantee that he could repeat things at another club, or even with Swansea in a higher division.
He'd be a better bet than Glenn Hoddle though.....

Probably the same reasons Pardew went to West Ham - we're a bigger club than them with more resources and a bigger reputation.

Are you saying that Welbeck, a player you have only heard of since he scored for Man United, is the best striker we could possibly sign in the event of promotion? Jay, I knew you had a reputation for basing your opinions on very little, but ffs!

Better than Welbeck doesn't even need to be a more talented player than Welbeck, though I'm sure we wouldn't struggle to find one. A striker who could challenge effectively in the air would do us more good.

Are you aware of Fabian Brandy, who is playing for Swansea? He's considered a better player than Welbeck, who hasn't been sent on loan because he's not ready for regular first team football. Compare his performances (in a much more talented side, who play far better football with Doyle's or NHunt's.

I agree that Welbeck has every chance of being a very good player in the future, but he isn't what RFC needs in the Premier League.

In any case, it was less of "struggling to attract players", more "slightly unwilling to upset harmony." You can raise me Brown and Lescott in addition to those we signed, and then HNA will come back with "right winger, defensive midfielder, fast striker, centre back", which were still needed after Brown rejected us- in July.
