MATCHWATCH : Cardiff City (h)

When : Saturday April 18 2026, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24161

Next up, looking to celebrate promotion at the SCL, is Cardiff City. In order to become the second successive club to celebrate promotion at the SCL this season the Bluebirds must win and hope Stockport lose at Exeter. Any other combination of results just keeps Cardiff on their way to the inevitable. Success in the feat though possibly means Reading becoming the holder of another obscure FL record ie “the first club to have two different opponents confirming promotion on their pitch in successive games”.

Brian Barry-Murphy has been fortunate in that Cardiff largely managed to keep their Championship squad together and for the most part they’ve subsequently hovered around the top 2 or 3 places all season. However the recent form for the club has become a bit, for them, ropey. This ropey form though does suggest that Reading could have a chance in this one if they can turn up on the day with a bit of determination, organisation and some proverbial shooting boots. Form for the Welsh is 13 points (3 wins and 4 draws) from the last 10 games while Reading are very marginally better on 14 points (4 wins and 2 draws) from 10 games so it should be a reasonably even game.

Top scorer Yousef Salech (13) has just returned from injury but has already resumed scoring after hitting the late equaliser at Huddersfield on Tuesday so he’s likely to be the biggest nuisance while former Reading player Gabriel Osho is now back from suspension so with Chris Willock and the Colwill brothers on top Reading will still have a very difficult afternoon.

Perhaps some will see this game as being one where they can get some true comparison between Reading under Richardson and Reading under Hunt given that Reading were really rather good for the first hour or so in the principality, before throwing it all away (just get the result Leam and everyone will be back onside  )

Marriott may make a shock comeback for this one but, after so long out, that wouldn’t likely be more than a place on the bench. Meanwhile Randell, Ward & Elliott will all be missing as we know but not really expecting any other casualties though Kamari Doyle & DerrickW have been reportedly touch and go recently. On the upside Andy Rinomhota has finally been getting back to being involved recently and no doubt would be up for “turning it on” against his former employers.

Referee

Matthew Corlett

Previously

09-Aug-25 > Reading 0-2 Huddersfield Town

Historically

The home record against Cardiff in the league is 14 Reading wins to 7 Cardiff wins while there has been 13 draws so this will be the 68th league game in total and Reading just about edge Cardiff overall with 24 wins to 22. Since moving to the Mad Stad things have been very even with 6 wins for the hoops and 5 for Cardiff with 5 draws so I’d say this particular game could go any way.

How to follow the game
  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an RoyalTV subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)
  5. Or you can always just go and get a ticket

It's got a bad loss written all over it.

0-3 Cardiff
Home fans booing early into the game after one goal, and then a very significant exit at around the 75th minute as Cardiff get their 3rd goal.

Really looking forward to this one

Expecting a reaction from the players and for the manager to phase out the loanees and incorporate some of the Academy players into the matchday squad

Sure we will see lots of front foot football, a cleansheet and a comfortable home win with the crowd really backing the boys and making some noise

Get David Hicks in the squad and give him some minutes in Doyle's position. We only gave him a 1 year deal, so might be worth seeing what he has at a senior level.

There is no point not experimenting now. Cardiff are going up anyway and we won't make the playoffs so playing what could be viewed as a weakened team doesn't impact anything.

However, we know that Leam will just stick with the regular line up and the match will go the same way as the last few.

We haven't been turned over this season at all have we? Can't see it suddenly starting.

Lost by two four times this season. Two right at start then Bradford then Orient in January.

Losing by 2 isn't being turned over though is it? Just seen it a few times where a big loss is predicted but that never seems to come to fruition.

That's right however, I think the players will be demoralised and there's a general feeling of negativity at the moment. They'll feel the season is over, Cardiff will be full of life, buoyancy and energy. 3-4 goals at minimum

We played well at their place and, regardless of our recent results, I'm sure they won't be coming here thinking it's going to be a walk in the park. Particularly if 'Jack in the box' is back in the squad. Then again, it depends on which version of RFC turns up.

We haven't lost by more than that, so there was nothing for me to count.

Ordinarily I’m all for seeing academy players getting minutes at the end of the season with nothing in the line.

However the Leam Out brigade mean it’s unlikely to happen given there is now huge pressure on him. If he goes with an assortment of academy players then that will be the easiest cop out going for him. He will give the haters a lot of what they want and can just shrug his shoulders and say “we tried something because the result didn’t really matter”

We have a lot of decisions to be made this close season about senior players so in my opinion we have to play the last few games like they do mean something and who knows we may benefit if we’re in the running this time next season.

If we see a raft of academy players then I might well be in the Leam out corner because he will have taken the easy/safe option which ironically is what so many of his haters accuse him of.

Thames Valley Police will undertake a highly visible and robust policing operation for the match between Reading Football Club and Cardiff City Football Club on Saturday, 18 April.

Section 35 orders will be enacted as a preventative measure to help ensure the safety of fans and local communities in the area.

Section 35 dispersal powers give police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) the authority to disperse individuals and groups who are causing, or are likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress from a specified locality.

The orders will be in place from 8am until 8pm on Saturday, 18 April, in Reading. The specific areas are shown below:

In addition, tactics including football spotters, mounted officers, tactical cyclists, police dogs and drones will be deployed to provide reassurance to local communities.

Chief Inspector Dave Washington, tactical commander for the match, said: “We want fans to enjoy the match, support their team and return home safely, but antisocial behaviour and disorder will not be tolerated.

“While the vast majority of supporters behave responsibly, we will take firm action against anyone intent on causing disorder, including arrests and football banning orders.

“If you are coming to the match, please say hello to our officers and speak to police, staff or stewards on the day if you have any concerns.

“We will continue to work with both football clubs, our partners and local communities to ensure a safe operation and prevent those who pose a risk of antisocial behaviour from impacting on others.”

Why on earth would we risk him now, given our season is effectively over? Give him longer in recovery/rehab and then a full pre-season.

I mean, it's not over is it? Stevenage at home to Lincoln so the gap could vey reasonably be 2pts come 5pm tomorrow.

Even if that happened (unlikely IMO), it's not just Stevenage that we're competing against for a playoff spot is it?
