Confimred - Conor Masterson

by Sutekh » 01 Aug 2026 19:30

Ramy has confirmed Reading have taken former Liverpool, QPR & Gillingham centre back Conor Masterson on trial. He’s 27 and a former RoI youth international.

He is a free agent after being released by the Gills in June.

So don’t get me wrong I would love for us to be aiming higher but…. If Ward and Oconner are the starting centre backs. Masterson would not be a bad back up and potentially would not block Kanu or Duah in there development. Cheap, seemed reliable enough, good pedigree. Has one player of the season at the Gills before. So a yes from me.

Yeh and also the whole point of a trial is to see if he's good enough. If he's shit, we simply won't sign him.

Quite a few Gillingham fans on Twitter mention that he is hampered by injuries

Sounds like he’s found the right club

Richardson on Masterson trialing for #ReadingFC yesterday:

“With our numbers being low, he’s been offered a couple of contracts around. He wanted to come in and train help us out…

At the minute we’re just helping each other out.”

Sign him on a 7 day deal and give him a start v Bromley and if he does alright, given him a longer deal.

Wouldn’t be against him. He did pretty well against Charlton

On paper sounds good but would that hamper him a bit - can only play for 2 clubs in a season can’t you? Or am I imagining that

Yes you can but at 27, I imagine whatever club he ends up he's unlikely to then head out on loan - so may be a risk worth taking from his side, depending on what offers he has on the table and who else (if anyone) we sign in his position.

True - I guess the issue would be he couldn’t then take a short term contract anywhere else - would have to be for the whole season

But as you say may depend on what else he has available

Another denial from Chronicle Ramy that he's signing after he attended last night.

"Been told that he will not sign for Reading, just training."

I can only assume he lives locally if we have no intention of signing him.

Maybe he is hoping if he hangs around long enough options will dwindle and they will give him a contract for the season as back up.

I think he could be okay as a backup. However, I have convinced myself we’re going to sign Dan Scarr as he’d be an ideal replacement for Williams. We’ve been linked with him before and he’s in the last year of his contract.

Hmm Scarr is a unit but another Paudie, I'd like someone with more pace as that's where we will continually get done with balls in behind

Was pleasantly surprised with how rapid Beacroft looked on Tuesday. It's frustrating because we're probably too light on numbers to get him the loan he needs this season.

I know what you mean although we do have Ward. Do you think if we can keep Dokes and Roberts fit that could help to negate the problem. As much as I like pace I do like a big CB who reads the game well and has good positional awareness.
