First up for the new season is a visit from highly fancied Luton Town so expect a very stern test which should give some indication of how good Reading actually are in the scheme of things.

Jack Wilshere’s hatters have a good squad at this level and will be anxious to show that last season’s end of season form (9 wins and 3 draws from the last 12 games) is more the norm for them than the erratic form they had been showing previously.

Preseason form has also been good with just one defeat (to Go Ahead Eagles) from the 5 games played culminating in a more than comfortable 3-0 League Cup hammering of Gillingham at Priestfield last Saturday. So Reading will need to produce decent form and a “front foot” performance right from the off in this one, which will be a big ask given Reading’s last league win was 3-0 v Wigan back in March - meaning the club have failed to win any of their last 6 league game (losing 4) and only just scraped through the League Cup 1st round on penalties at Bromley last week.

Luton have strengthened over the summer, having received their last set of parachute money. Striker Callum Marshall arrived from West Ham in a £1.5m deal to join the £500k paid for Hull’s Kasey Palmer and the free transfer of Bolton defender George Johnston. Leaving them were Christ Makosso to Auxerre for £2m, Cayley Woodrow to Wycombe, Jacob Brown to Reading and Millenic Alli to Charlton.

It’s the forward line that’s the most threatening of what the hatters have to offer with the aforementioned Callum Marshall joining the likes of Gideon Kodua, Jerry Yates and the very well known, to Reading fans, thorn in the side in the shape of Nakhi Wells. The Luton midfield is also worth watching with Kasey Palmer and Jordan Clark being very capable of creating things as well as chipping in with goals so Leam will need to ensure his homework is top notch and Reading have a way of minimising Luton while inflicting themselves on things.

Injuries have already placed questions marks over Jack Marriott but hopefully the bout of novovirus has packed up and left that club leaving the players more able to find some measure of form than the malaise many seemed to be under last weekend. Meanwhile Luton will be without the injured former Reading Academy youngster Shandon Baptiste.

Finally, remember this one is a 12.30pm kick off and, like all opening day fixtures, is being “red buttoned” by Sky and available via NOW for those with Sky subscriptions.

It’s been pretty even overall between the two clubs down the years, Reading have won 17 and lost 6 of their 27 home league games against Luton.

Opening day league fixtures though have dealt Reading an extremely miserable time of things in recent years with just one win (2-0 at Derby in 2020) and one draw (at Birmingham in 2024) to show from the last 5 seasons. Last season the club crashed 2-0 at Lincoln and the season before were done 1-0 at home by Peterborough so if ever a trend needed bucking….

Difficult opening fixture. I put 1-2 in the prediction league, cue meltdown on here.

That being said, concern with the squad is depth; not the first 16 players or so. So perhaps we can match anyone on the opening day at home.

I think it will be a decent game but Luton will have the edge, if we put in a performance I'll be ok with that whatever the result.

The worst case scenario is that we take an early lead, go into hang on mode and lose, I'll probably give up for the season if that happens.

I'd completely forgotten it was an early kick-off on Sky, so the numbers aren't as bad as I first thought when looking yesterday evening with that context.

We appear to have given Luton their full allocation. They'd sold 2,115 by Monday afternoon, which is a good following from them tbh.
