Daniel Kanu

by jonnyroyal1871 » 24 Aug 2026 17:29

The 21 year old Sierra Leone international has been mentioned enough times to warrant his own thread. Just 1 in 20 for the Addicks the last time round in L1 which is concerning - but 18 in 44 at Walsall looks a lot better, Walsall started that season on fire. Clearly a good footballer with potential, but is he the striker we need now, not potential - but ready to join Jack, or step in for him. We need a 1st team ready striker. Is he the one? Is he even available.....

Seems like my guy was right and this is the one…. Also said Masterson was playing the waiting game to see if he can get a contract if all other options fail…..

Rather have Hal Robson.

Sorry, that one had to be done.

The big question is availablity but if he is in our price range then he is just the kind of player we should be signing - able to have an impact now but at 21 only going to improve.

His record over his career to date is a goal every 212 mins or a goal/assist every 177 mins. So if he keeps that form he will be involved in a goal every other game (in terms of mins on the pitch).

He's 8cm taller than Marriott so would give defenders something else to thing about if he comes off the bench for JM in the last 25mins.

Personally see very few downsides to a perm deal, if it happens.

Probably as good a prospect as we’re likely to pick up. Can’t remember ever watching him but he did well last year and plenty of men’s football at a young age

Hmmm "at 21 only going to improve" as if that is guaranteed.
It doesn't always happen-I give you big Kelvin E.and the lad who scored at Birmingham (or was it Walsall?) on his debut and is now nowhere to be seen.

Jahmari Clarke - he's currently "ripping up" the Jamaican Premier League - well scored 6 goals mainly from the bench for Montego Bay United.

Obviously there are exceptions and with big Kelv, the move to Denmark may actually help him kick on.

With Kanu, he already has decent experience at 21, so you would hope there is more chance, wherever he goes, that he can build on that.

Yes, of course! Getting confused, sure Nahum did something in a Reading shirt before leaving, more like they were just both pretty forgettable and left around the same time.

Hearing this deal is very complicated.

There has been 3 offers for him all very similar. Kanus preference is us which is a good start. They want 1 million and noone has reached that yet.
The other 2 are slightly higher offers but reading are looking to offset some performance related bonuses as part of the Knibbs deal. To make up to close to a million but Charlton are not convinced those bonuses will be met so they are gambling on fees they may have to pay if Knibbs hits those feats.

Ultimately Charlton are looking at more upfront with us and less of the Knibbs related payments so this may roll on till the end of the window. They are looking to sell not loan though.

Who the hell do Charlton think they are trying to get £1m for a lad with <100 professional starts, only 7 L1 goals and who spent his most recent season in L2?

Jog on.

Edit: and only 1 year left on his deal. If I were Couhig/JJ, I would never agree to meet it.

It’s more than half the battle if the player concerned truly does favour Reading as he and his agent can apply pressure to Charlton to come to an agreement as well, and if his agent has other Charlton players on his books….

Agree that on the face of it holding out for £1m is utterly ridiculous, it’s not as if he has been ripping up trees at Charlton or during his times on loan but they’ll say you’re paying for the potential as he has it in him to become something. Now Reading presumably agree with that observation so it will become a battle of the negotiators (calling Nicky to the scene).

Really don’t see this being sorted until much nearer deadline day when both sides start getting “edgy”. As long as Chelsea (or equivalent more money than sense outfit) don’t come in we might be able to get somewhere.

Maybe £1m is a fair top end fee after add ons if he scores scores 30 goals, gets into team of the season, we get promoted etc., which reflects his potential. But I don't think the guaranteed fee should even be half that given his career to date.

Agree this screams a TDD drama where a club has to decide to concede on their price or keep him on the wage bill and probably lose him for even less in January.

Notts County and Burton battling over him apparently. Can't imagine either of them will pay anything near £1m.
