MATCHWATCH : Swansea City (a)

by Sutekh » 16 Oct 2022 09:14

When : Tuesday 18th October 2022, 7.45pm
Where : Swansea.com Stadium, Morfa, Swansea, SA1 2FA
Capacity : 21,088

Reading take their odd season to Swansea on Saturday amidst a pile of problems. Firstly form is getting a bit iffy with a decent but flawed performance at QPR being followed up with a very quiet and thoroughly disappointing no show v WBA. Secondly, once again injury (and now illness) is putting paid to any attempt to keep the side fresh not to mention the obvious loss of key players. Thirdly this game is away from home and scheduled for a Tuesday against a team beginning with S and Reading just don’t win this sort of game - the last away midweek win against a side not beginning with B was at Leeds in April 2014, some 50 (FIFTY) games ago.

So there’s going to have to be a lot of work and preparation for this one not least to kill the threat posed by Oliver Ntcham who seems to be building a very decent run of form for himself recently. Rumoured Reading target Jay Fulton seems to be driving midfield and defender Kyle Naughton is always someone to watch.

Swansea started the season indifferently but have picked up a great deal recently with their 4-0 setback at Burnley being their first reverse in 5 games having won the 4 games previous to that so this is going to be as hard as it can get.

Reading have 8 crocks plus the manager and Lumley both ill. Ejaria though may return after a precautionary rest on Saturday. Lumley may also be able to return depending how quickly he can shake off the “whatever it is, but definitely not you know what”. Swansea have one injury problem which will see Liam Walsh ruled out of the game, however Joel Piroe is suspended having been dismissed at Burnley for violent conduct (though Swansea are considering an appeal depending on what they see when they review the footage).

Finally, this game is on the red button.

Referee

James “never had a Reading game before and this is also my first season umpiring at this level” Bell

Historically

This will be the 37th league visit to Swansea who have been consistent opponents stretching all the way back to 1920. In that time there have been 10 wins for Reading and 17 wins for the Swans. There have been only 3 goalless draws in that run but Reading have had a tendency to “come a cropper real good” on several visits, esp. in the 1960s when the club conceded 5 goals on three consecutive visits. That said, though, the biggest win was Reading’s 6-1 hammering of Swansea back in 1989/90!

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription (audio only)
  5. SKY Red button
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Can't see us getting anything from this. It will make next Saturday's game very important.

A point would be a good outcome. So changes to formation and personnel required.
Go 4-5-1 and make four changes.
Lumley if fit in for Bouzanis. Fornah to come in as the additional midfielder. Rest Hoilett and start Meite. Long in with both Joao and Carroll benched.

Ince moans about injuries. Well ok make changes then! Long, Meite and Fornah should all be fresh.
We badly miss Hutchinson. His brilliant positioning and leadership is badly missed.

Hendrick and Loum need to sharpen up and be on their game from the start. Both cannot afford to be dispossessed like yesterday. If Ejaria was ready to start I would play him ahead of Hendrick but clearly he will be a bench option at best.

After wobbly form in the last few games a visit to our bogey team isn't exactly ideal.

A draw would be a very good result.

Mentioned that after the QPR game. It simply isn’t good enough to go on moaning about fixture congestion and then not making the most of subs. We have options so it’s really disappointing. Wouldn’t be surprised if we were under 50% in terms of using our subs this season

Would go with a similar team to yours:

Lumley

Yiadom
Holmes
McIntyre

Hoilett
Fornah
Loum
Hendrick
Guinness Walker

Ince
Long

Same team that beat Blackburn 3-0 in what was our standout performance of the season

Should be noted we`ve not scored an away goal from open play this season yet.

I doubt with Joao, Carroll, Meite and Long fit he’ll only start one and play Ince up top

I do think that is ince’s best position though

Not sure what he’ll do tbh. Thought Meite and Joao combined well but doubt he’ll drop Carroll

Guessing he might put Long in for Joao with Joao/Meite the plan b

Fornah for Hendrick is an option - thought Jeff did ok tbh against wba except for the second goal. Suspect he might just keep the midfield as is. Loum was better but needs to sharpen up, lost the ball 3 or 4 times

When was the last time Swansea beat us in the league? Most recent fixtures have largely been draws, barring our win last season away at their spot? They didn't even beat us when we went on that terrible losing run under Gomes a few years ago.

72 league games played to date. Both teams have won 28 times with 16 drawn. Last defeat was in July 2020 by 4-1 at the Mad Stad (think that was the one where Yaks got sent off at the end). Last defeat at their place was by 2-0 almost exactly 4 years ago.

Turns out it is a pretty poor record then bar our win last season, thought we had another home win against them at some point during that spell. Still, I prefer to see it as no Swansea wins in 4 rather than our poor record in the long(er)-term.

Just get the feeling we will turn them over again though.

Last game of the season the 4-1 was, we were on the beach and they nicked 2 goals at the end to take the final play off place from Forest

Sutekh Joel Piroe is suspended having been dismissed at Burnley for violent conduct (though Swansea are considering an appeal depending on what they see when they review the footage).

Zero expectation tonight, our away midweek record coupled with the fact they are a bit of a jinx surely there can only be one result, come on, surprise us.

I think we need to drop the Joao or Carroll partnership until we figure out the best way to make it work. Carroll just invites us to launch balls up to him - WBA were happy to allow him to win everything as it was not in a dangerous position and Joao is not a player to challenge for the 2nd balls. No point in Carroll playing if his back is towards goal and 50 yards away.

Think Tince needs to be knocked down a peg or 2 as well he is constantly on the players backs even though he is the most guilty of over playing things. His yellow card on 15 minutes was due to him cheaply losing the ball when a simple pass was on.
