by The Royal Forester » 24 Nov 2023 13:38

Get reading/Berkshire Live has announced it will be closing down on the 30th. November 2023. As it has been sparse with Reading FC news and reports lately, I won't miss it, Will you?

Well I haven’t looked at it for ages and very rarely since JLow left - and was quite sparsely in his time there

Won’t miss it in its current form but wasn’t so long ago it had excellent coverage and reporters. So yeah will be a miss from that perspective. And a shame generally

Yeah. The difference between now and nothing isn't that much. It was good in its day though.

Yeah a bit of a shame, would usually been one of the first things I'd see if I was looking for news on anything, although certainly haven't seen as much from them as I have previously, irrespective of whether it was worth the read or not.

All very sad but reflects how local newspapers are going, look at what the London Evening Standard is now compared to what is was.

Back in its heyday the Evening Post was one of the best of its kind in the country, its printing technology was frontline and I believe it was the first newspaper to publish colour photos, as it did during the first moon landing in 1969.

It ceased to be back in 2014 (below), since it's switch online it's been a pile of utterly cheap clickbait cobblers for simpletons (l'll miss the next Yermaz though).

And I love the sports headline - revolving door at RFC. How many managers since then? Isn't Ruben the eight in less then ten years?

Nigel Adkins went in December 2014 (almost 9 years ago) since then
  1. Clarke
  2. McDermott
  3. Stam
  4. Clement
  5. Gomes
  6. Bowen
  7. Paunovic
  8. Ince
  9. Selles
So it's 9 in 9

Clarke
McDermott
Stam
Clement
Gomes
Bowen
Paunovic
Ince
Selles
Unknown by the end of the season.

Prior to Clarke:
Adkins
McDermott
Rodgers
Coppell
Pardew takes us back to 1999.

So 5 in 15 years vs 10 in 10 by the end of the season.

If you go back further, we only had 4 managers in 20 years 1970-90, Mansell, Hurley, Evans & Branfoot, and up until Branfoot it was hardly a successful period. Completely different back then, no big money I guess driving everything.

Go back even further and you'll find Harry Johnston, possibly the longest serving and least successful manager of the lot, 1955-62, Won nothing, presided over steady decline.

I think the bigger factor is no transfer windows.

If you were up shit creek before the late 90s/early 00s, you went and poached someone good from the division below.

Now you can't so your only option is sack the manager. And I think football is worse for it.

And Porterfield so that's 5 managers, though Branfoot was unnecessary as Evans had Reading on the upward turn long before IB arrived.

It's incredible that such sites haven't realised that splattering your site with clickbait and intrusive adverts, making it a horrible experience to visit the page, doesn't encourage people to visit the page more often.

I agree and surely all these stupid adverts are if no interest to anyone so the number of clicks must be tiny
